I finally figured it out!!!
Tesina:
I have been using PI for 5 years now, and it wasn't till just the other day that I finally figured out how to do this!!
Problem: If you create text or any other object that's not shaped like a square or a rectangle, and you want to save that object as an anti-aliased, transparent "cut out" object with absolutely no background on it, it seems to be impossible to get PI to save the object like that. You can select .GIF & TRANSPARENT properties in the SAVE dialog all day long, but every single time you save it, you'll get some sort of square or rectangle "holding" the object you wanted saved as a "cut out".
Solution: When saving, choose the following: File > More Save Options > Save For Web > As Single Object
Then, you must select either a filetype of ".GIF" or ".PNG".
This will cause PhotoImpact to bypass the all-too-familiar pop-up dialog that tells you "The file format you have chosen does not support the current image type. ... blah, blah, blah"
I sure wish I'd been able to figure this out a long time ago - I always had to go over to Xara 3D to create my text objects and export them to anti-aliased .gif because PI would always screw me in that regard.
Good luck!

That is a load of cr*p and, if you have been using PI for 5 years, as you claim, you should know that.
I have used PI for around 5 years as well and never had to use another program or save in your strange way either. I did do the beginners workshop though and there they taught me how to do it. When you want to save for web use with a transparent background, you create your object on a colored background, as close as possible to the background you want to use this object on and, when you safe the image to gif you declare this background to be transparent, bingo.
By having the "transparent" background color as close as possible to the background you want to use this object on also eliminates the jaggies showing up around your object.
