VS11 trial and NVIDIA cards - create disc preview fails

Post by JS »

I have tried the VS11 trial on 3 different Vista 32-bit PC's and the preview functionality in "Create Disc" does not work on the 2 systems with NVIDIA cards. No error, it just doesn't display anything. It works just fine on the system with the ATI card. All other functionality (so far...) appears to work fine including burning of the project to DVD (you just can't preview it.)

Some quick system specs...

#1 Dell XPS 410 , Dual Core 6600 at 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE, Vista Ultimate 32-bit - preview fails
#2 Dell Dimension 8400, P4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon X300, Vista Ultimate 32-bit - preview works
#3 Dell Dimension 8300, P4 2.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500, Vista Ultimate 32-bit - preview fails

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Perhaps you need to update your Nvidia Drivers

FWIW, I have a new HP Pavilion 9000 with Vista Home Premium and VS11+. It has an NVidia Go7600 with 256MB of its own RAM.

I just dropped a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 into the burning module of VS11, accepted the default menu template and went to Preview, which happily played back the project, including the mpeg-2, back...

If you installed Vista on the two Dells with the NVidia cards -- in other words, they did not come preloaded with Vista by Dell -- then Steve is probably right and you will need to update the drivers.

For what it is worth, the NVidia driver on my computer is version 7.15.10.9815 dated 27 February 2007 provided by NVidia and signed as approved by Microsoft. I see on the NVidia driver site that there is an 818 update for this driver at http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_158.18.html

Thanks Ken and Steve, but that didn't fix the problem. I already had the latest Vista drivers from Dell, but updated both NVIDIA machines to the latest from the NVIDIA site anyway. Still nothing when I try to preview. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again.

Update: Just for kicks I installed the MovieFactory demo on one of the NVIDIA machines, and the preview functionality works fine. Perhaps the VS11 problem is only with the Demo???

Could be. I have the full version of VS11+...

A final update on this one for those who are interested...

It turns out that the "preview challenged" machines needed a Direct X update. I bought the full version of VS 11+ and had the same problem as with the demo version. After trying many things, on a hunch I installed Win DVD 8 Silver from the "bonus CD" download file and suddenly the preview in create disc worked. By process of elimination I determined that the Direct X installation, which is part of the Win DVD setup, fixed the problem.

So for those having preview issues in disc creation, a Direct X update may be your answer. It worked for me...
