Dear all,
I have recently bought a panasonic HDC-SD1. The camera is fantastic and the video when played back through the HDMI output to my HD TV is simply amazing.
However, the main way I usually watch videos I shoot is convert them to wmv-hd and play them through my xbox 360 media centre, streaming from my computer over a wired network.
I have never used video studio before, however when I try to convert the avchd video to wmv-hd the options I have for the wmv-hd are WMV-HD 1080 25p or WMV-HD 720 25p. I choose either of these but the resultant video only renders out at a small window size say 320x240.
When I look at the properties in this save dialog they are as below
Windows Media Video
24 bits, 1440 x 1080, 20 fps
Frame-based
22.050 KHz, 16 bits, Stereo
Windows Media Video 8 for Color Pocket PCs (225 Kbps)
i.e. the last setting seems to be the problem. Even if I try to export a custom setting of wmv hd, the profile tab offers me many different profiles but none of which seem to support HD.
Do I not have the right codecs on my machine.
I have also tried outputting to avi, this works but the video though 1440x1080 is really grainy and a bit jerky.
Any help would be most gratefully received.
Exporting avchd video to wmv-hd

In the export module that you just posted with the wrong hd-wmv settings click on the advanced or options button/icon to access & program the windows encoder settings.
The ulead presets should be listed. What I use for HD-WMV is the 9 encoder series. You can also create your own custom encoding templates to achieve the highest quality streaming to the Xbox360. You will have to find those specs on the xbox's website.
I know you can also burn them to a dvd and playback HD-WMV on the xbox360. Probably also a usb harddisk.
All the hd-wmv videos I've made are CBR for both the video & audio with a maximum total bit-rate of 8000kbs (8Mbs). Video is usually about 7.32Mbs & Audio is 16bit@384kbs.
Some HD-WMV playback devices are very picky on how the hd-wmv files are encoded.

Dont loose your time with those intalled codecs , VS10+ does not come with the right codec for WMV-HD.
I went through this in a previous closed JChunter high def tutorial that you can reach going back many post.
Getting the right codecs (and encider) is neccessary but not sufficient , those codecs can only link to Ulead MediaSyudio 8 (If you dont istall media 8 even trial version , then you won't see them as optionnal codecs in VS10+).
Hope VS11 does not come with those silly limitations

Thanks for your prompt response. I have now installed windows media encoder version 9 from the microsoft site. This does give me some more codecs which I am experimenting with.
So far the the video is not as good quality as straight off the camera through hdmi but I presume this is due to the lower bit rate of the codec i.e. 6000 not the 11800 that the camera took. Remember I am still getting up to speed with some of the concepts here - so sorry if this is not correct.
The other thing is that I cannot choose an option for the audio to be 5.1 even though the camera has recorded in this format.
One further question what effect do the project preferences have on the process. It defaults to DVD Pal 720*576 Stereo and you seem to be able to change this but I am not sure what it actually does or if it is affecting what I am doing.
