Well, happy to be a guinea pig, I went to the Ulead site, clicked on Upgrade. I fed in my old number, it was accepted. But then I got the message that there was nothing in my shopping cart since the product -- which I had clicked on on the home page -- was not yet available!!

What gives?

Edit: I have since revisited the website. Very definitely clicked on the Upgrade/download version of VS11+. Still get the same result: not available, though it says that what is not available is the Upgrade/boxed version, which I did not tick.

I begin to understand why so many people had so much trouble downloading VS10+.

FURTHER EDIT: After another couple of tries, it finally started downloading. Although I have ADSL, I will now go to bed and hopefully will have the new toy to load on this Vista machine tomorrow...

Hmmm .. at first glance, I don't see anything too earth-shattering in the new version that would convince me to part with another $60.

To be honest, in comparison to some other software packages I use, a lot of the "new" features in v11+ would be classed as updates and provided free to current users. A good example of this is my favorite Genealogy program "Legacy". Their new versions are few and far between, but they update almost on a monthly basis, adding features, modifying bits, changing things that go wobbly.

Some of the 'new' features in v11+ have been available in other packages, like Roxio, for a while now, at a comparable price point.

I'll be watching this board with interest to see just what people think of v11+, and hold off buying it for a while until the reviews are in.

Having just gone in to HD, I'd be interested in hearing what is there for HD users that wasn't in v10+.

I'm in total agreement with Hugo.

I've bought a few other software packages for my PC and mother has a Mac with many software packages she's bought. I know many companies run by the idea of upgrades to a version number are free and upgrades to a new version number have to be paid for but do the updates to VS11 warrant a new version number?

I'm also going to wait before upgrading...

Well...that's how Ulead does it. They release new versions that you must pay for. They do release updates, but those are usually only to fix bugs.

I guess Ulead has enough users willing to pay for an annual upgrade to warrant this practice.

Yes. I think of it as being a little like Quicken Personal, which I have a subscription to. I get the annual update, and pay an annual subscription which is not greatly different from the price I have just paid for VS11+.

I have now installed VS11+, but have not yet had an opportunity to put it through its paces. Later today.

But while I understand people holding back from buying it, for those of us who both like VS, AND have a computer running Vista, buying this new version seems to me to be a no-brainer. I had not installed VS10+ (and the Vista fix) on this computer because at best it was only an interim measure and I had VS10+ working fine on another computer running XP Pro SP2.

Now I will be able to see how VS11 works on a Vista computer...

And yes, I happen to be a bit of a computer (and video) nerd and love getting the latest version of everything!!

I suppose there are two ways of looking at it.

1. You pay more for your original product and then are eligible for free updates of new versions for a certain period of time, perhaps 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, life.

2. If option 1 was implemented then we would undoubtedly have the same number of complaints from other users who will say "But I am happy with what I have got, I don't need all the new extras and so they should have sold it to me cheaper without these constant updates."

I guess whichever way you decide to push your product you are going to be in a no win situation.

One way round it would be to have a basic fee for a single purchase and an enhanced fee for future proofing and get 'free' updates.
However that too would be prone to disaster. what happens to your 'Free updates' if another takeover takes place - there were two in the last 12 months with Intervideo and then Coral. the lawyers would have a field day in the civil cases where users try to hold a new company to a contract by a company that no longer exists.

In the case of another takeover the new company would no doubt already have a number of their own products performing similar functions and the management of that company may decide to drop a few products including yours.

I guess we just have to accept that these things are decisions made by the software company and decide for ourselves when a new release comes out whether to stick with what we have or to get the latest version.

Remember, when a new version comes out the old one that you already have doesn't suddenly stop working.

.....and you can cut the cost by resisting the temptation to buy every new version! you could upgrade to 11+ from as far back as VS6 - Sadly I haven't resisted so far

Chris,

I went in and looked at your BB code to see why it wasn't displaying correctly. You need to have a space between the end tag and your period at the end of the sentence.

So I edited it, and for some reason your next post about not getting the hang of quotes disappeared..

Looks good Chris,

Also when you are posting look to the lower left where is says Options. The BBCode is a link, to the FAQ, explaining all the BB codes. Also clicking on the "BBCode" in my previous sentence takes you to the same page.

Looking at the trial I'm having trouble seeing improvements over 10+. I'm sure there are a few scattered around the place, but it's not enough to warrant me paying for the upgrade. I can live without the small updates (except if they'd sorted out the issue of it having to load the entire waveform of a clip while editing keyframes... that'd be nice). Plus, the blue interface bar at the top is ugly with a capital U! I can see someone's tried to add in more white on blue because that's the colour of the timeline and a few small boxes, but I feel as though it's a little too much... it takes away from the program's clean, modern look, and makes me feel as though I'm editing videos for the police. Dark colours at the top of the screen makes your working environment feel cramped, as though you're working in a cave. Keep is light please Ulead- the program feels much more spacious.

Anyway, I was excited about this release, because both I and others had given the devs a huge list of things to impliment (and they seemed eager to do so), but I think there's something like one of them in there. They would have made the program much more enjoyable to use, and would have had me jumping at the chance to own it. As it stands, and as someone has said, VS11 is just 10 with a few small extras... but nothing really worth paying an upgrade amount for. Not in my opinion, anyway.
