2 hr, 9 min DVD won't play past 2 hrs

Post by Tim&Crystal »

Hi,

I tried search for this problem and didn't see anyone else with the same thing. I hope I'm not bringing up something that was discussed before.

I'm using VS9 and just made a DVD from a 2:09 video. When I play the disk, however, it stops at exactly 2:00 and returns to the menu, even though the player still shows 9 minutes remaining. Any idea what's going on here? I appreciate any help.

The original video file was transfered from the camcorder as an AVI, edited in VS9, and then rendered to a MPG file of 4.4 GB using a calculated bitrate of around 4400 (I can't remember the exact number). When in the create DVD menu, VS9 showed it as definitely fitting on the disk. I added 17 chapters to the menu but everything still fit. I then created the DVD using the regular "Burn" command.

Thanks so much.

I thought it might help to provide some info on my DVD player. It's a Toshiba TiVo Series 2 with DVD RW drive. It plays and writes DVDs both -R and -RW.

What's the actual filesize of the source MPG? Although DVDs are labelled as having a capacity of 4.7 "GB" this is a decimal expression i.e. they hold 4,700,000,000 bytes. That's equivalent to 4.38 computer/hexadecimal Gigabytes. On the face of it, a single-sided DVD couldn't accommodate a 4.4 Gbyte file plus, perhaps, diskspace needed for a menu. If this is the problem, though, what's puzzling is why didn't VS complain about lack of diskspace.

Another possible explanation that occurs to me involves disk quality. DVDs dye layer quality tends to deteriorate at the edge of the disk. Maybe your PC burner was able to burn to the edge of the disk, apparently successfully, but now can't read its own burn at that point.

Perhaps you should re-render your project with a somewhat lower bitrate so that you're not bang up against the disk's capacity.

Depends on the abilities of your burning software. Some "other" burner software allows you to ajust the time length of the actuall burned DVD, but, you sacrifice quality over the length of time to be played. (which, most of the time, since over TV playback, doesn't matter, unless it's true HI Defintion)

This falls into that category where you don't want to rely on one product to accomplish your task. Use as many different programs as possible to achive your goal.
