I just have a few general quick questions about DVDs/DVD Writers:
#1: why do the DVDs already seem to have a layer of printing on them or something...

Will my simple disc label creator still work with DVDs? (it is the one where you print out a disc label and then stick in onto the disc - adhesive)
#2: How does the following look as a first DVD writer?

Thanks!
Never used DVDs Before...

#1 - you mean printing on the "Top"? That's normal for most brands. Some brands have no writing on them, and some are even inkjet printable.
#1b - general consensus is to AVOID applying sticky labels to DVD's -- they can cause issues during playback. Better to get inkjet printable DVD's, and a printer that can print on them (Epson R2xx/R3xx do a great job).
#2 - don't overlook the software bundles that come with some burner. The latest Pioneer comes with a pretty good software bundle. As usual, different brands always have positive and negative feedback (not all computer configurations are created equal).

I've been burning DVDs for past few months, and I've burned and labeled about 70 DVDs (I'm on my second spindle of 50). I've labeled ALL of them with "CD" labels. The only problem I've had, is that they don't stick very well to inkjet-printable DVDs.
I've been using the "Neato" CD labels (and Neato compatible) on CDs for a few years (and a few hundred CDs). A CDs data-layer is on the top, and a label can protect it from scratches. This is not a problem with DVDs, because the data layer is in the middle.
The only problem I've had was the CD player in my old car had a little trouble ejecting CDs with glossy (smooth) labels. I never had one stuck in there, it just wouldn't come out as far. I may have had one label that started to peel off...?
Doug.
