Cannot load DVD of home movies, program freezes

Post by Johns »

Hello,

I have just downloaded the trial version of Ulead VideoStudio 10 and have immediately run into a problem.
I started with the VideoStudio Editor, clicked on "capture", then "Import from DVD/DVD-VR". I then selected my dvd drive that contains a DVD I made from VHS tapes using a DVD RECORDER (Panasonic DMR-ES35V) and pressed "Import". The "Import DVD Initialization" Box opens and begins "Parse DVD Content". When the process gets to 63% the program stops and freezes. Clicking the "cancel" button does nothing and I have to reboot the computer to stop the program. The same thing happens with another DVD. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? I cannot reach tech support without buying the product, but if I cannot get past this hurdle, I likely will not want to invest in the program. I have been looking at "search" for an hour and have not found anyone else with this problem.

The DVD plays just fine in my DVD player.
Here are the files on the DVD:

VIDEO_RM
VIDEO_RM.IFO 32,768
VIDEO_RM.BUP 32,768
VIDEO_RM.DAT 1,048,576

VIDEO_TS
VTS_01_1.VOB 940,572,672
VTS_01_0.IFO 30,720
VTS_01_0.BUP 30,720
VIDEO_TS.IFO 12,288
VIDEO_TS.BUP 12,288
VIDEO_TS.VOB 55,296

I thank anyone in advance for your help.

The format you posted above is for a disk written in the +VR mode, usually using a DVD+RW disk. Or otherwise known as an editable disk. You can edit the menu's.
Did you finalize the dvd if not a dvd+rw disk? Some recorders can write this mode to +R media but the dvd needs to be finalized.

Try recording a dvd in the panasonic unit in standard video mode to a dvd-r dvd.
There was one release where there was a slight problem with the +VR mode.
This is easily fixed by replacing some files and also updates to VS10+ but VS11+ is going to be released soon so maybe hold off until June until buying anything.

You could also download and test the trial version of MF6+. MF6 was tailored more for working with the dvd recorders and importing from dvd's.
If you install the trial version of MF6 it may also repair the problem in VS10 importing from your +VR dvd. They use the same files, MF6 has an updated files for doing this.

Thanks, etech6355.

The disk I used is a Verbatim DVD+R 16X. I did finalize the disk. I don't have any DVD-R disks on hand, I will have to get some and try them. I will also try the MF6 you suggested. I will report back how it goes.

Thanks again!

Johns,
Panasonic must be recording in more modes than the earlier dvd recorders. I don't have a +VR mode on my panasonic dvd recorders.
When you record onto a dvd-r there shouldn't be a VIDEO_RM Folder (haven't seen that yet).
The VIDEO_RM folder with files in it is the sign of the +VR format. The other term would be editable disk. Maybe you have a choice(s) of recording in the setup menu of the dvd recorder for "Standard Video" or Editable type of disk. I don't find the +VR format very useful for my uses, you can only edit the menus. With the videos it's either keep them or delete them. It is also a format that takes awhile to import (could have been your case).

When you record a dvd in the recorder in straight dvd-video mode there will be a VIDEO_TS folder and possibly a AUDIO_TS folder.
Most dvd-video dvd's have both VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folder. Usually the AUDIO_TS folder is empty.

The -VR mode is the editable video mode where you can trim or divide the videos. You can record in the -VR format onto a dvd-ram disk, that's panasonic's signature, matter of fact the dvd-ram disks only record in the -VR format which uses playlists and no menus.

Anyway, wrote this because I'm not up to date on the latest panasonic dvd recorders so check the manual and in the recorders setup pages. I wouldn't think that every DVD+R dvd would have to be written in the +VR editable format. The +VR format also can take quite awhile to import because the dvd has to be imported parsing between the VIDEO_RM & VIDEO_TS folder. Dvd's don't mulitple seek very fast so importing can be very slow due to the extra time needed to read of the VIDEO_RM folder.

Create a folder on your hard drive and copy all of the files from the DVD to that folder. Now try importing again but this time from the hard drive folder.

I have had this problem too, when importing DVD+RW discs created on a Panasonic (also with some DVD-R discs friends have sent me).

The fix that works for me is as follows.

Get hold of a tool called FixVts from http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FixVTS

Copy the DVD to your hard drive (using Windows explorer, just as you would any other set of folders).

Run them through FixVts.

Import the fixed files from your hard drive into VS.

Hope this helps!

There is nothing like a computer that can make me feel stupid.

First, I ran a Registry cleaner program that apparently shut me out of Video studio. Kept getting a message "The security information has been modified. This program will be terminated". Removed VS10 and reloaded, same problem. Removed program again and re-downloaded. This time i got VideoStudio11! It opened normally. Retried the DVD+R. Same problem..had to reboot. Went to Walmart, got some DVD-R. Made a new copy, tried it in VideoStudio11 and it loaded!

NOW WHAT???? I have this "importDVD" window that can play the dvd and lists chapters, etc. But how do I get the info into the main window so I can edit the video??? There appears to be no "help" file. The only option given me is to "close" the "import dvd" window. If I close it, I have no obvious way to move the files into the main program. I have tried "file", "insert media into timeline", and "insert media into library" and each time I get the "import DVD" window with no options other than close.

Can I really be that stupid?

When you use the Import from DVD/DVD-VR function you apparently get the DVD structure because you can see the chapters. Are you checking the boxes next to the titles or chapters to choose which ones you want to import?

BTW, the reason there is no Help file is because you are using a downloaded trial version. They skip the Help file to reduce download times. However, you can download the manual here.

Johns,
Can I really be that stupid?
I'm not going to ask why you used a registry cleaner.
Just a note, the +VR format takes a long time to import because of the dvd seeking times are very slow for multi-track seeking. Copying the dvd written in the +VR format to your local drive as sjj1805 suggested would speed this up. It could be your drive hanging up or you have to be patient and wait a long time. Even though taskmagager says not responding and the program appears not responding many times control will be returned back to the program after it exits whatever process it was performing.

Before you do anything in VS you must setup your "Preferences".
Goto "File -> Preferences" or use the F6 Hotkey.
Assign a working directory.
Check on the following "Use Mpeg Optimizer", "Show Message when inserting first video clip into timeline", Instant Playback, Preview Window.
Under the "Edit Tab" check re-sampling quality = BEST".
Close VS to retain all these settings.

Start a new project.
To import the dvd-r disk put a check in the boxes on the left. as Black Lab stated.
If you select the top box the complete movie will be imported to your local harddisk which is my preferred method (one complete mpeg2 file of the movie).

Creating a new dvd:
In VS11 after you finish editing your video(s) first render the complete project to a new mpeg2 file by following these steps:
Goto Share -> Create Video File -> Mpeg Optimizer (provide a filename and save)
After the new mpeg2 file is created on your local drive.
Start a new project (empty timeline)
Goto "Share -> Create Disk"
In the "Create - Disk" module click on the top left icon to insert your new rendered file into the burning module.
Click on the GEAR Icon (bottom of page). Make sure "Do Not Convert Compliant Mpeg Files" is checked ON.
Also check to make sure the Aspect Ratio for the dvd is set correctly.
Proceed on to the menus & burning modules.

How to use VS such as cut/trim/transistions and all it's features goto the tutorial sections on the bottom of the main forum page. You can use the VS9/10 Tutorials until the VS11 tutorials are updated.

Much thanks, etech6355 and Black Lab.

Using DVD-R enables me to load the files with no problem. Things are looking good as I follow your advice. However, I have run into a little problem with the DVD-R disks. While I know the problem has nothing to do with VS11, I thought perhaps one of you may have run into this before: With my Panasonic DVD recorder, I have made both DVD+R AND DVD-R recordings of the same VHS tapes. As before, the DVD-R disks load easily into VS11 and the DVD+R disks will not. But, the DVD-R disks have a problem not apparent on the DVD+R disks, in that the DVD-R disks exhibit an intermittent low frequency audio rumble (quite loud, actually) that lasts anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds on and off and the DVD+R disks do not.
Anyone had anything resembling this before between DVD-R and DVD+R?

Solution so far with indebtedness to Adrian Perkins!

Finally had a chance to download and process the DVD+R disks with the FixVTS program. IT WORKS! Thanks Adrian. So Far, so good. I have not as yet burned a new disk from the VS file, so I cant testify as to fidelity, video or audio, but it seems promising!

Still I am wondering what the low frequency audio rumble is coming from on the DVD-R disks.
