Ok - I am capturing Hi8 tapes which are old-ish .. 7 years or so. I am using a Canopus ADC55 analogue to digital device which is an excellent device by all opinions.
Intermittently, say every 5 - 15 minutes, I get a VS9 error message "Unexpected Error. Removed Device".
the capture stops even though the camera still is going.
I notice the signal through out my capture is a bit 'jumpy' and in looking at the Canopus user manual it does mention that the status indicator when flashing red can mean: "ADVC55 Can not produce normal DV stream output because of excess fluctuations of synchronization signals"
Can someone be so kind to translate what is going on and whether I can do something about this eg are my heads dirty ? as capturing a tape is really a challenge with it going off line every 5 - 10 mins.
Many thanks to all Vince

My first thought, like yours, would be to clean the analogue camera heads...
Does this happen with all Hi8 tapes, or only certain ones? Some of them could have deteriorated of course -- been in excess heat for instance, tape become a little distorted in parts, or stretched...
But you might want to do a Google search for a small freeware DV capture program called WinDV. Try and see if that works with the Canopus. If it does, then it will at least indicate that the problem is associated with VS9 rather than your camera or Hi8 tapes... or for that matter the Canopus.
Or, like me, you will continue to use it for capture then open the DV files in VS for editing... (though I do it because I like WinDV rather than because of any problems with VS...)
EDIT: I have just seen your other post where I had already suggested the WinDV route. That advice still holds, however.
