Audio out of sync

Post by MikePH »

I have DWS2 (with all the patches) but I am having trouble creating a DVD from an mpg with the sound in sync. I can use the same mpg to create a perfectly good DVD with DMF6 (or DMF5) but, for some reason, DWS2 creates audio sync problems. I have played the mpg in all types of players and it is perfectly fine. I have also played a DVD of it created by DMF6 but DVD Workshop seems to be the problem. Is it do with the multiplexing of the audio and is there a way to force DWS2 to use the same settings as DMF6?

If your mpg file is DVD-compliant, make sure BOTH the video and audio 'Convert to disc template' checkboxes are unchecked. If one or the other is greyed out, it means your mpg file is non-compliant.

I'd thought of that but it didn't alter the result. I don't normally do much video which requires audio to sync precisely but, in this case, DWS seems to make quite a pig's ear of holding audio & video together. I'd be happy to stick to DMF6 but the menu creation process in that product is still so VERY limited. I'm amazed that they still don't allow you to add any objects, put in more that one heading or delete any objects (you can only hide them!).

You probably have a slightly corrupted MPEG... I call it "sneaky corruption". Something's wrong with the file that causes it to go out of sync when it's re-coded and re-multiplexed.

For example, imagine that you have a few corrupted video frames. You might not notice anything when you play the file. But, these bad frames might be thrown-out during re-coding. If the associated audio is not also thrown-away, you will get sync problems when the audio& video are re-multiplexed..

Both VideoReDo and Womble have tools that can sometimes repair an MPEG's time codes. (Both offer free trials.) The idea would be to process (repair) the MPEG before the problem shows-up... before you bring the MPEG into Workshop.

Thank you very much for your thoughts. I still believed it was down to DWS2, though, because I could make a perfectly-acceptable DVD in DMF5 & DMF6. I ended up completely reinstalling DWS2 and it appears to have solved the problem (I don't know why it should!).
