Where in the #%$&?! do you click for "Ripple Editin

Post by G-man »

Man, I am so frustrated! So forgive the attitude. Ulead's "manual" is a classic example of what is wrong with so many tech writers (they write for users who don't need help).

Page 65 instructs you to "Click Ripple Editing to activate...". But WHERE do you click? Where is it hidden? None of the menus mention the term, and I can't find an icon for the function.

Every computer-related manual that I have read--since 1984--has been little more than advertising of the product's features...telling you about the WHAT and nothing about HOW to do it. Has anybody located where on the GUI you can "Click on Ripple Editing"?

If anybody has actually performed Ripple Editing, please let the rest of us know HOW you did it or if there is indeed a place to click to activate the feature.

To the Left, to the Left (got that Beyonce song in my head).

To the Left of the Timeline are two icons -- hover your mouse pointer over the icons to see some info...

You should also have a look at page 36 of the manual where you will see the Ripple Editing icon indicated as item number 2.

Aha! I see that my math was off...

Thanks guys.

When the manual referred me to page 64, I should have known that I should immediately divide that page number by two then add two because I divided by two to obtain the correct page number, which is 36. Sometimes the exercise of logic can be an impediment.

As I see it, not to bother folks at this wonderful forum too many times, I have three choices when seeking info in UVS manual: (1) read all 177 pages of the document; (2) pray for a miraculous revelation of the info; or (3) talk to my cat, for all three options are better than looking at the index. Again, thanks for the valuable help. I am grateful.

I don't know about your manual, but when I turn to page 64 in mine it discusses Ripple Editing.
(1) read all 177 pages of the document
Reading the manual is a good thing. There may be many other things you are missing.
(2) pray for a miraculous revelation of the info
Never hurts.
(3) talk to my cat
That's fine, as long as he doesn't talk back.

Thanks

Hi Black Lab,

Anyone who loves black labs must be alright!

I like your response. Thanks. But I respectfully disagree with you about page 64, which tells you to do something with the assumption you already know where to click. Brian Cee's response (above) points out that the location of the little icon is on page 36, which if included in the index would have spared me of the frustration of the unsuccessful search. He also directs us to a site with some useful info about UVS (q.v.). I apologize for the gripe: prior to running into the problem of following vague directions in the UVS manual, I had to labor with the Nero Wave Editor manual, which index has page numbers that are entirely incorrect. I guess I just ran short of patience. Maybe I expect too much from a software manual index.

Kind Regards

None of the buttons are labeled in VS. You have to hover over them to see what they are. Page 64 of the manual is about Ripple Editing, complete with some pictures, so you know where to look for it. Hovering in the area of the picture would have revealed what you were looking for.

And if you had read the manual you would have found where the button was on page 36, before you got to page 64 where it described the process. At least it wasn't the other way around. (See, there is method to their madness. )

My day-time job is really cutting into my passion for authoring and edting video (good problem to have), so I haven't had a chance to follow the valuable suggestions posted. You are correct BL, the ripple editing icon is marked by a red box on page 64, but it's not labeled as such like on page 36. Fair 'nuff. I've learned that you just have to read the manual from start to end. Yet adding page 36 to the index about the feature would have been appropriate.

Gosh, I am am sooooo thankful. The steps you posted are unmistakeably clear. Why don't software mfrs recruit folks like you to write their manuals? The analogy of the hand pulled out of the bucket is utterly right-hemispheric and priceless...a mark of a superior teacher. Whatever compensation you receive for contributing to this forum cannot be enough. Again, thanks.
