Thanks for the pointers black lab, a few things I should add / clarify...

I wish it was possible to bind shortcut keys to menu items (e.g. bind Ctrl+Q to 'Save as Still Image').

I wish, the audio filters button was on the audio view where I expect everyone would look for it, and worked the same way as the video filters (a list of effects that you can drag & drop onto the clip, with the ability to modify and test filters while you tweak the settings). The current system is a bit cumbersome.

If you do 'Tools -> Save Current Frame as Image' you get an image in the same format as the Project Settings. If you do 'Clip -> Save as Still Image' you get an image in the same format as the original clip. I dont quite know what I wish, except that I had noticed sooner :roll:

About the timeline stutter....I dont know how VS is working internally, I can only look at what the tools tell me and draw a conclusion from that. So understand that the rest of this paragraph is nothing but conjecture. Every time VS needs to redraw the screen, for every clip on the screen, it goes off to the clips video file and recalculates the thumbnail to display (even with 'Cache Image Clips in Memory' ticked). Maybe the image clip caching isnt working (or its nothing to do with caching the clips of images in RAM), or perhaps what I have written above is a load of rubbish. I can only tell you for certain that with as few as 3 1280x1024 FRAPS encoded clips on the screen, the timeline stutters, and with 6 clips, if I scroll about 200 pixels (during which time there were 3 screen updates) VS reads over 30Mb from the disk!

Again, it seems as you are dealing with very compressed files. It seems that with VS, the more compressed the file the more problems it has handling said clips... :roll:

While I would agree with you in general, in this case, I think the compression has nothing to do with it. For one thing FRAPS files are significantly less compressed than an MPG2 (which happen to work fine). I expect its more of a bug than anything else, if I put an MPG2 or XViD clip on the timeline, VS reads them just the once. I can scroll around as much as I want and it doesnt have to go off to the file again like it does with FRAPS encodes.

Library (sub)Folders - Tree Control

Post by wbusselle »

I was expecting a few more features with the Library in VS11 as I thought I would be able to create folders under folders for example:
Videos->
----> Trip Clips
-----------> Erie Canal
-----------> St Johns River
-----> Birthdays
------------> Matthew
------------> Mark
------------> Luke
------------> John
Were this implemented I would presume features to create new (sub)Folders, drag and drop, etc would be implemented.

A Library Clip Digest List would be handy as currently available in "DV Quick Scan Digest" Wizard.

I agree...

the library management is a bit on the clunky side.

Inserting clips where we desire

Post by babdi »

Any new clips we add ( the problem becomes more acute if the clip trial is long ) it goes and sits at the end.( Main time line or overlay timeline ) It would be useful to insert a clip or an image where we want it to be inserted instead of dragging the clip across. This should be a useful time saving feature.

Clips in the Overlay track do not automatically go the beginning of the timeline (if it's empty) or next to the last clip on the timeline. That only happens in the Main track. Clips in the overlays can be placed anywhere.

My wish list, having had VS3 to VS 11P:

I wish that when a clip, overlay, sound, or title track was selected that the handles (those vertical lines that show where the clip starts) would also show where the clip ends. That way if you want a clip to end at a specific point the "moved" would "snap" at either the begining or end of the reference clip (Depending on where the "moving" was located in the timeline).

VS did this, I think it was in VS 4 thru 8, and it really help aligning where things were. Unfortunately it was dropped in VS 9.

Another wish, would be to have the individual clip "cut" or split at where ever the Project timeline indicator was stopped at. Say you're previewing the project and see a point the you want to cut one of the other tracks at. You stop the preview, move frame by frame to where you want to edit ...but as soon as you select one of the other tracks, it snaps to the beginging of the selected track and you loose the reference cut point in the track.

and, it'd sure would be nice to upgrade from one version to the next without having to recreate all of your own clip libraries again.

You can do that, by copying the various .dat files (video.dat, image.dat, etc.)

Insert a few clips in Overlay or Main track one after another. Now try to drag drop another. It goes at sits in the next empty space available ie., at the end of the already laid out clips. What I suggest is to be able to "insert" between clips say 1 & 2

I don't understand. You can drag and drop a clip anywhere - at the beginning, between clips, at the end. Wherever you drag it to is where it will go. :roll:

Okay. I understood. What I had been saying happens when you insert video from file instead of from library which I said goes sits at the end.8) .
I usually pull clips, images straight from the folder instead of making a library of them

Preview Speed

Post by MikeB51 »

One of the very few things I liked in Pinnacle Studio is the ability to speed up the preview play back during editing. This would be a handy option in future versions.
