mastruck,
I have a question for you. Reading the specs on the HDC-SD1 it says it has the capability to accept a s-video IN signal. Have you tried this yet? If it can convert analog via hardware to H264 format is a nice feature, this means a person can convert there existing videos to H264 AVCHD format like Hi8,VHS tapes and all. . Does this Panasonic Camcorder come with any software?
Your cams files aren't dvd compliant and must be converted. You have a cam that's new hightech, the format is new.
1- Start a new DVD Project
2 -Import videos from avchd camcorder
3 - Export to DVD Compliant files (retain the field order!!!!, probably Upper_Field_First)
4 - Close MF
5 - Start a new DVD Project
6 - Insert the DVD Compliant files you exported in step 3 into the timeline.
7- Save project, and proceed to master a dvd
OR, go buy a PlayStation_3 unit, pretty sure you can stick the memory card into a PS3 and play the files directly, playback only. The PS3 plays the dvd-rw's written in AVCHD from the sony cams. It is supposed to also play your files from the SD card.. The videos I've converted to H264 play on the PS3 from a SD card.

What I've tried
Steps 1 & 2 work fine.Your cams files aren't dvd compliant and must be converted.
Step 3 gives me an error every time and not a very useful error message - "unspecified error". I've tried every template setting I can think of.
My conclusion: The Moviemaker SW does not support AVCHD files created on the Panasonic AVCHD Camcorder(s).
I haven't tried the S video in feature. I'm in no hurry to convert non HD content to a format that has little or no SW support.
The Panasonic camera comes with a basic SW package that allows you to create an AVCHD DVD that can be played on Blueray players with excellent quality.
The problem I'm trying to solve is creating a SD-DVD copy that I can give to friends who do not have a blueray DVD player yet (most everybody).
- So far Nero 7 is the only SW I've found that does this, but you have to be sure and keep your "scenes" (AVCHD files) to less than 10 minutes or 1GB. The camera starts a new AVCHD file every time you use the pause button. I'm not sure why it has problems with files that are larger tha 1GB. I was hoping Moviemaker would handle this, but it doesn't appear to support the format at all despite the claims on their website (at least they let you find this out with a trial version).

Re: What I've tried
My conclusion: I don't believe the MF6+ is designed to work for AVCHD footage shot on a PAL camera. The frame rate allocation and subequent stuttering of clips, I believe, are linked to this. As a casual observation, think MF6+ is for NSTC format cameras only. ie the US market.
Any one who can advise different... please, be my guest.

VideoStudio 11+ can import the .m2t files (H264) directly into the timeline from your hardisk or import them the same as MF6+.
Exporting them out to a compatible editable format can be somewhat tricky if you haven't worked with the hd-mpeg2 format very much.
Experience is the best teacher. I would start by working with short clips of about 2-3 minutes each.
You can use "Share -> Create Video File -> HD_DVD 1440
or
"Share -> Create Video File -> HDV -> HDV1080i (HDV) which yields 25000kbs (TransportStream Format - TS), mainly used for writing back to tape.
"Share -> Create Video File -> HDV -> HDV1080i (For PC) which yields 25000kbs (Program Stream Format - PS), Most common for general playback.
or
"Share -> Create Video File -> Custom & set all the parameter settings the same as exporting in MovieFactory 5 or 6.
or
"Share -> Create Video File -> "YOUR HDV TEMPLATE"
How to create a "HDV Template":

Also read this post for more detailed instructions on how to import from a avchd device: VideoStudio11+ AVCHDTools -> Make Movie Templates Manager -> Mpg Format -> Compression tab = MPEG2 (then set all the encoding parameters appropriately) save this template and apply it when going to "Share -> Create Video File -> Your Template".
