question regarding use of proxy files

Post by bodkin button »

I'm a bit confused over the Smart Proxy thing.

I'm editing with lots of small clips to be taken from around 35 videos of about 45 minutes .

I've organized them in the library so there are about 4 or 5 videos per folder so I can find what I need.

In Preferences I have enabled the Smart Proxy and clicked the Auto generate proxy template. The Auto generate bit I haven't a clue, but it seemed the right thing to do to tick it.

The following is the bit that puzzles me most.

I go into the library to select a video to find a clip and if I right click the thumbnail I get a drop down menu like you usually do. On this menu is the option to Create Smart Proxy File....

If the original video are 40 mins, not split by scene but whole files and quite large files do I need to do this before I start to make a compilation of clips? Does it make editing quicker? If I do it I gather the original files stay the same? And the thumbnail then represents a proxy file? Or is enabling the Smart proxy in preferences already doing that job?

I'm just really confused today :?:

The smart Proxy file creation is for slower computers working with HighDefintion video files.
Most users editing HighDefintion video report they don't need to use this feature. I don't need to use this feature on a 2.8ghz machine and VS edit's the videos without a problem with smart proxy disabled.
If you working with Standard Video you shouldn't need to have smart proxy enabled.
When editing any video in VS (any version) make sure your "Project Settings" are set equal to your source material.

:D

Thanks for that I really wasn't sure whether to enable it or not.

I will however check the Project Settings carefully, that might be why I have a slow editing process. I have tried to make sure all the source files are the same but I will now double check this as well before I start my next project.

Thanks again.
