I've made wedding, anniversary etc. shows with VS & the finished product is great but....I too have recently been getting the same err. msg. "VS has encountered problem....."
I bought VS9 last year but it began to close automatically. What I mean is I'd be in the middle of putting in pictures or effects and the program would disappear from the screen like I never opened it. No virus etc. detected. Then a few weeks ago the "encountered problem" msg. started. I reinstalled with no change. Then during playback it would almost be to the end and the music stopped playing the show continued and then the screen froze up.
Last night I downloaded the trial version of 10+ opened the show I created on VS9, burned the DVD with no problem. I was happy and was ready to purchase. Today I opened another already created project and the program closed just like it would do with VS9. I'm a bit baffled. Any suggestions? THANKS

It is possible it could be a fault in the program but it is more likely to be a fault in the source material.
Please describe to use the origin of your source material and how you got that source material onto your hard drive. We will need to know as much detail of the source material as possible
Right click the source material and note down all of the various properties that are displayed.
Let us also know what your project settings are.
You say you are ready to purchase VS10, A little birdy has told me that VS11 will soon be released.

VS9 & VS10+ trial
Hi
My source material is always the same. I use scanned photos with ext. of jpg. I then bring them in as thumbnails to the program. The audio files are always mp3. I also bring the song into the program as a thumbnail; if you will, and drop that into program from there.
The project settings are:
mpeg files, 24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, framed-based, DVD NTSC 4:3, video dta rate: variable (max 7000 kbps), LPCM audio 48000 Hz Stereo,
"do not convert compliant mpeg files" is checked
I've also used: audio data rate: 256 kbps, Dolby Digital Audio, 48000 Khz,
2/0 (LR)
Some people are unable to play disc with Dolby Digital Audio because it is not supported on there playback topset player.
Hope this all helps. I can wait for VS11. Thanks for tip.

It may be the MP3 file format that is causing you the problems. You and others may have no issues for quite some time while using that audio format. Then all of a sudden, wham things start going tilt. The reason being is that MP3 is not a standardized audio compression. There are numerous compression/Decompression schemes based on the MP3. So you may not be getting the same one every time.
I would first try converting your MP3 to WAV. VS seems to handle the WAV format better. You can do this using the free audio editor Audacity. Several members use this. It is amazing what this freebie application can do.
Everything with your Properties look good, the Frame size, bitrate, fps.
Then when you are preparing to start a project, always tune up your machine. Just like racing, race teams always make sure their machines are tuned up ready to race. Empty all Temp Folders, run a defrag on the drives that you will be using. This would include the one the OS sets on, and the one(s) that are established as working drives/folders. Also go to the working folders and check for any left over files, and if not needed, delete them. This will go far in allowing VS to work smoothly.

I agree with Ron regarding MP3. The LameMP3 codec in particular seems to cause problems.
But I am surprised that some of your friends have players which won't play Dolby discs. But if that is indeed the case, then if your projects are one hour or less, then the bitrate you use suggests you should get around one hour on a single layer DVD if your use LPCM audio. And that definitely is playable on all DVD players...

Wav vs. MP3
RON P. & KEN
Thanx for both your responses....I have tried wav before & it was OK. I thought that the show would be longer though because, as I understand it, wav files are not compressed? I have dBPower Amp to convert to wav. I will try audacity. It may be better.
I also wanted to mention my DVD burner/player is not the fastest in the world...it is a Sony, U18A I believe is the model #....I plan to get a faster burner, but I don't think that would be the problem also, do you?
What do you think is causing the program to vanish off my screen? I'm not even near the mouse or keyboard when it happens.
Hoping VS11 will be better. I have Indeo Codec that I had to buy, but I can't remember if it was for VS.
Thanx again

wav compression
Hi Ken
I was working on a project earlier. I used dBpower amp to convert the audio into wav. Are you familar with them? It gave an option of compression before conversion. I used that. The project is one that was disappearing from the screen as I worked on it, however it did not happen this time.
Will let you know how it comes out.
Thanx Mahja
