How to use masks????

Post by bruhnf »

Hello everyone,

I am new to PI and am trying to learn how to use masks. I know this is probably one of the most basic things you can do in PI but I can't seem to find a tut on it. It seems the tutorials are on very advanced topics. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a some line art. It is black and white. A good example of what I am starting with is located here.

Now.. all I want to do is fill it in with colors. Anyone know where I can go to learn how to do this?

Thanks in advance.

After I read my post I figured I'd better elaborate on this. I don't want to use just a basic bucket fill. I want to be able to use the mask of the object to fill it in with shades and textures and so on. I want to be able to use the shape of the line art as a template and fill it in with whatever I want be it colors, another picture, etc. Hope I am explaining this correctly.

Do you mean like this?

Image

What I did was:

Convert the image to RGB True Type color
Use the Magic Wand Tool to select each area I wanted to fill
Filled the area then Selection:None
Went to the next area to fill and then repeated the above step.

Hope this helps.

Yep... that's what I want to do. Thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can make it work. I did find some tuts on this but they are for older versions of PI. Like 8 and 9. I have 12 and the buttons aren't always in the same place.

Well anyway.... thanks again for responding.

Hi Bruhn,

You could always join the free Beginner's Workshop that teaches you the basics of PhotoImpact. Also, that techno mask is one of the projects in the course.
You can find information about it here: http://www.pirc-bw.com/

There's many ways of using masks and lots of tutorials too.
PhotoImpact International has a Resource where you can find more tutorials.
Which is here: http://photoimpact-international.com/resources.html

Hope this will be of help to you.

Yes thank you. I found that workshop and put in my request but the admin hasn't approved me yet. I read that there is like a 3-4 month wait. Whewww.... Must be a lot of PI newbies out there. Anyway... I am trying to learn on my own until I get approved for the workshop.

If you know of any otheres that aren't so backed up I'd love to know about them.

Thanks for the tip though.

You're lucky you got on the waiting list. I tried signing up for the basic course and i got rejected after 1 month!! I was pretty upset. Anyway, then i found
this course here

PhotoImpact 12 video Tutorials (Tips, Tricks, Techniques)
http://www.seeitdoit.tv/pi12/pi12.asp

and no regrets!! They are a video based tutorial training course that showed me all the core stuff i needed to learn.
Finally someone took the iniciative.

I have read other people on the board that have been waiting for months. Forget it...

Hope this helps.
