MediaStudio Pro 8 - video capture locks up

Post by chan88 »

Nature of the problem:
When launching Video Capture 8.0 the "change field order" shows a progress bar that gets to 50% then it locks up.... and shows (Not Responding). As a workaround I have been using Windows Movie Maker to capture video.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
Devices include: Sony VCR/DVD player, Sony HI-8 camcorder, Cannon Mini-DV camcorder, and a Panasonic Mini-DV camcorder.
Mode of connection include: USB, 1394, Composite & Audio/Video ports

NTSC Video

Error Codes
The only error is (Vcapture.exe Not Responding)

Computer Info:
- HP Media Center PC
- 2.8ghz Pentium D CPU
- 1.5 GB RAM
- 300 GB Hard Drive (60% free space)
- Windows XP Media Center SP2
- Mother Board: ASUSTecComputerINC.
- Display: NVIDIA GeForce 6200SE
- Conexant Falcon II NTSC Video Capture
- DVD: ASUS DVD-E616A

I don't think XPMediaCentre is a supported OS. This could be the source of your problem?

I'd hope so. Doesn't it have some MS-VR file support?

in any case, need more details from the original poster- what's the current capture device? The Conexant Falcon? I assume that is an analog device, if it's talking about field order stuff? (and is that the USB you mention?)

How does it work for DV camcorders (over firewire)?

When I used Media Studio Pro v6.5 I was able to launch and use video capture.

After upgrading to Media Studio Pro v8 the video capture no longer works.

((Currently I can use Windows Movie Maker to capture video. I can use my DV camcorder to download video to the computer using either USB or firewire. I can use my analog camcorder or VCR to download video using the composite connections.))

Service Pack 1 is available for Media Studio Pro 8... has it resolved problems for you? Do you think it is worth a shot???

Certainly SP1 for msp8 is useful, some good new features and fixes, although I'm not sure it has anything specific for your issue, check the release notes.

I have never heard of a DV camcorder using USB to download DV video. Are you sure you are using DV connection? Some (sony?) will stream or transfer low-res video over USB, but you should always be using firewire for DV.

For DV, make sure you are using "Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin" as the capture plugin, and once your DV camera is connected via firewire & recognized by OS, make sure it shows up in the "Device Control" dialog's "current device" dropdown (sometimes you may have to select it.)

I'm not sure what the analog device capture would use, either the DirectShow also, or it would be automatically detected.
I don't think MSPro8 supports VFW (video for windows) capture any more/as well, maybe that's an issue? someone more analog knowledgeable would help better, I'm sorry...

I use WMM to capture DV even though I have no problems with MSP VC. WMM is far more forgiving of "blank" bits of tape. The only downside is that VC indexes the changes in timecode for DV, whereas you have to do it (just once) manually with footage captured in WMM.

You should always stay up-to-date with service packs.
