Best to remove paper lables?

Post by steve_ss »

I have trouble with paper labels causing my DVDs to freeze and distort. After a little research this turns out not to be uncommon. After removing the label from one disc the problem disappeared. Most of the label came off OK but some places it left the glue layer with thin paper. I managed to remove it all with my thumb nail and a rag with paint thinner, being careful to keep it on the label side.
I have 30 more to go, any suggestions for better removal?

Just use a liquid detergent in warm water, and wait some hours.
Then peel the paper jently of the DVD's.

Rinse with de-ionised water and let the DVD's dry.

I must agree that paper labels on DVD discs are a pain.
If one gets slightly torn or the glue gets loose it can get caught up in the DVD recorder/player bit like when a VHS tape gets caught in the works.

I have previously used a similar method to IronS and soaked a DVD in soapy water and carefully dried it being mindful that the recorded surface can get easily scratched. This has helped remove fingermarks or when someone (perhaps a grandchild) held a disc after eating a packet of chips!

Assuming that most of these DVDs are readable on your computer, it would be easier to copy them onto new blanks... Make a back-up/archive copy while you're at it!

Personally, I've never had any trouble with labels, except when I stuck them on printable CDs/DVDs... They don't adhere well to those. :(

Unfotunately they play reliably until I remove lable.

That is exactly what I want to do. Unfortunately they don't read reliably until I remove label.
