Convert Step Got Some Problem [257:0:0]'

Post by jackm08 »

I am using Ulead Videostudio 10. I combined several clips into one clip. The clip is an MPEG and it is described as NTSC 720*480 ¡V Stereo. It is 407mb.

When I go in to Create Disc and attempt to create a DVD or ISO file I get the message, ¡¥Convert Step Got Some Problem [257:0:0]'

This happens everytime I try to Create Disc even when I use other files.

I could not find anything in the forums, manual or knowedge base.

I have used Nero 7 to create a DVD using the exact same files and had no problems.

Appreciate if anyone can provide any assistance.

Could you right click within VS on the mpeg-2 your produced and copy down ALL its properties here, please. You have only given us a bare bones description so far.

Can you also confirm that after you produced that mpeg-2, you then opened a new project -- thus closing the existing one and emptying the timeline. And with an empty timeline, you then went to Share > Create Disc to open the burning module, and you manually inserted your new mpeg-2 into what should have been an empty burning timeline.

If you didn't follow this procedure, it is possible that the program itself automatically inserted your project into the burning timeline, meaning it would have to try to convert the project to an mpeg-2 (again) on the fly, but it cannot manage to do so. Thus the error message.

I have today experienced exactly the same problem, but the cure suggested by Ken Berry worked.

I had the problem on all Projects and files.

However, it is very disappointing that this workaround is necessary. If this turns out to be a continuing problem, I will revert to VideoStudio9, which did not have this issue. :!:

I'm sorry, but a work-around is in the mind of the beholder!! I personally never use any other method than the one I suggested, and have been doing so consistently since VS7 to my current VS10+. For me, it is hardly a work-around but my standard work flow.

Other people jump the intermediate step and it works for them. I don't call it a work-around just because I don't use it; just another modus operandi.

Yet others try jumping that intermediate step and sometimes it works, and sometimes it does not work, regardless of the version (and believe me, there were lots in that category with VS9 too). For them "my" work flow becomes a sensible procedure to achieve the same end.

So it is whatever works well for an individual... or what you are -- or grow -- comfortable with.

The OP hasn't given us the mpeg properties -- I'm wondering if the DVD Tempaltes were used, or just mpeg was used with some modified settings -- that might or might not be dvd compliant).

Also, was menu audio used -- if so, what were the audio properties? Sometimes *.mp3 audio tracks cause issues. Converting them to .wav 48khz helps resolve some of those issues.

Regarding Ken's workflow -- I agree that it can vary from user to user. In the end, if you find a process working for you, then stick with it. I have a number of workflows, and which I follow depends on the project at hand. But I ALWAYS keep an open eye/ear on the suggestions/worfklow of others -- seems like I learn something new every day...

Same error message causes frustration

Post by David Badger »

I've been getting the same error message with VS 10 but only when I want to create a menu for the DVD. If I skip the 'create menu' step there's no problem.
I always start a new project before attempting to create a DVD. I use existing templates for the menu, just editing the text, but have found it quite frustrating to get the 'problem with convert step' message without the slightest hint as to what might have upset the program or how to avoid the error.

Any suggesstions?

So I assume you didn't read this post? It has a lot of info regarding this problem.

Thanks, Ken! Your answer worked for me, also (Using VideoStudio X7).

I'm having exactly the same problem. Whenever I try to burn a disc directly from my timeline, this grammatically fractured message -- "Convert step got some problems" -- pops up and the program crashes. Similarly, when I try to convert a project from the timeline to an AVCHD file, the software crashes after about 15 percent. I have failed four times so far.

The problem w/this has always been motion menus. If you disable this and/or music on the menus, there's no problem. This is an issue that has been reported and never dealt with by Corel.

If you are having problems in rendering the project then there will be issues when trying to burn a disc from the timelines.
Once you have successfully rendered the project to AVCHD, you should be able to use that file to burn a BD

Please give us some details of your project, the type of video files used.
Right click your video clips and choose properties, what are they? you can create an image of that panel to attach to your post.

Now if the program is crashing at the same point then there may be a problem with the timeline content at 15%.
Look at the timeline at 15%, what is there? have you applied any additional filters to your clips at that point? Maybe a different type of video??????

On making authoring a DVD in VA Ultimate 2018 or X10, I get the same 257:0:0 error as soon as I click on the burn to DVD icon. There are no music menus. Killing the motion menus makes no difference. This has never occurred when authoring Blu-rays. It's an mpeg-2 file captured from my camcorder via HDMI (Hauppauge video capture card) and rendered with Cyberlink PowerDirector 15. The time length is 68 minutes. I rendered its size so that it would use up most of the DVD with a bit rate of 8350, hoping for better quality. There are 15 chapters. Having no chapters makes no difference. It makes no difference with the aspect ratio. Changing the audio to Dolby stereo makes no difference. I started off VS with New Project, went to Share, then DVD, and added the mpeg-2 file. Where the file gets written to (disc or iso) makes no difference.

When I re-rendered the captured file in PowerDirector to an 8000 bit rate instead of 8350, that's what made the difference! I could use Dobly audio, 2 pass conversion, 100% quality, 16:9 aspect ratio, custom menu templates, etc., etc. Now, it has just created the iso, which I will write to the blank DVD using Nero (since NO version of VS verifies the created disc). For those of you running into this "Convert Step Got Some Problem [257:0:0]" error, check your bit rate and if it's over 8000, VS doesn't seem to be able to convert it, so re-render it at a lower bit rate, like 8000. Nothing else made a difference.

Hi
I do not have the older versions of VS installed but pretty sure the default data rate used for Mpeg2 is 8000kbps
We can avoid the convert title step within the authoring stage by first creating / rendering our project to Mpeg2. If that fails then there is a problem within the project.
The new Mpeg2 video can be used to burn the disc / create the ISO
You should make sure the project properties match the Mpeg2 before doing Share-disc-dvd.
When we choose Burn the process should start with convert menu, not convert title.
