Very frustrated(and new) VS7 user, please help

I have been trying to burn a DVD+RW of a movie that is 1hr 29mins 59secs.
I am on my tenth try, I am using the 4000kpps setting for the compression, and it always gives me an error message reading :Disk is empty or no disc in drive. It takes about 2 hours to get to this stage. I have installed the Burner patch, and re tryed it, with no luck. It was captured using the ADS Tech. DVD Xpress from an analog camera. My computer is 3.6Ghz. Very new. I am burning at 4X speed. This is getting very frustrating, I would appreciate any help with this problem.

First off, the next time you get to the final stage of the Create Disk process, output to an ISO file instead of burning directly to disk. This will give you a DVD disk image that can be burned by the CD/DVD Image Burner utility that comes with UVS, or any other program that understands ISO files.

Second, are you sure your current DVD media is compatible with your drive? There is no point in buying the latest high-speed media if your drive cannot handle it -- in fact, it may suffer permanent damage if you try.

Third, what other programs do you have installed that can burn disks, and in particular, do you have any packet writing software installed? If so, you may need to uninstall it if it automatically locks the drive when a disk is inserted.

Sorry to go off topic, but what's that about permanent damage to the drive? Are you saying that my drive might be damaged if I buy the wrong discs? How do I know which ones to buy?

Any advice appreciated!

last year it was reported that if you put a 1-4x disc in a 8+ write speed drive and wrote at the higher speed the disc might break up in the drive or fly out injurying the pc user. from memory i think it was panasonic drives affected.

Gordon,
You are way off the track. If you follow the Recommended Procedure you will not be performing "two-hour" converting video operations and your PROPERTIES will be consistent and proper for burning success.

The symptoms will vary by vendor, drive model, and firmware version, but I think in most cases the problems will result from not being able to recognize the media or interpreting the write strategy information incorrectly.

In some cases the disk will endlessly spin at high speeds (and possibly disintegrate as David wrote), or the pickup lens assembly will constantly move back and forth from stop to stop trying to calibrate. The following document from Sony's website indicates that in most cases, damage will occur within 2 1/2 hours if incompatible media is left in the drive.

Some of the earliest Sony dual-format burners also had incompatibilities with specific media similar to this, and Verbatim and Pioneer warned against the use of this media in the Sony drives.
