...do I only actually need one thumbnail (containing the AVI) in the library? Pennies are gradually dropping as I begin to get the hang of the programme, and it's occurred to me that when I've dragged a thumbnail to the timeline and edited it there, I can simply drag it down again into the timeline and edit there to make the next clip. I originally assumed that any changes I made to the thumbnail shown in the library would affect the copy I'd dragged to the timeline, but they don't seem to.
This may well sound like a stupid question, but it's the sort of thing I can't seem to find answered in the .pdf. It's probably the sort of thing that's second nature when a person's been using the prog' for a while, but it's all rather confusing to me at the moment.
Many thanks for any clarification.
To make multiple clips from 1 x 40 min AVI...

Your getting the hang of it - you do indeed only need one thumbnail in the library - nothing you do in the timeline affects the thumbnail, or indeed the original .avi file on your hard drive - that remains at all times exactly as you saved it.
All the edits you make to your video are saved in the project file (.vsp file) and it is that file which keeps a record of which bits of your original video are used in the final production - so save that regularly and look after it.
