Help needed for capturing analog

Post by JoOWiTHaU »

What's up Ulead peoples. 8)

I've done searches on this problem I'm experiencing but have had no luck getting any results! I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have a Turtle Beach Video Advantage USB capture device to transfer Hi8 analog video from my Sony Handycam. I'm using VideoStudio 9. Computer specs should be more than sufficient, but are listed in my profile.

I used to be able to work just fine with all this equipment a few years ago with great results. But I've stopped using it since then and JUST recently found a need to bring it out again but I can't remember how I did everything! The first problem I'm having is a tiny video frame size, 160x120. I can't seem to change it either, which is odd. I can go to file > project properties and change it there, but it actually captures at 160x120.
The second problem I'm having is simply no audio capture. I've tried almost every combo of audio device and input source but nothing will give me sound. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris,

looking at a review for the Turtle Beach device you need to use their capture program. Are you doing this or trying to capture with VS9?

Hey Alan.

I actually have tried capturing on both programs. The program that came with the Video Advantage USB is PowerDirector 3. When I load it up and click on the capture tab, it scans for inputs and then it GREYS OUT the option to capture from a DV device. So then I'm only left with capturing from TV or microphone :( It's really frustrating actually because I have no clue what the problem is.

I've made a home video before using VS9 to capture a few years ago with the same equipment and the quality turned out wonderful. Where did it say you could only use the software that came with the Turtle Beach device?

Hi, Some of your programme drivers may have been removed when uninstalling another programme. I would start by uninstal /reinstalling the capture programme software.
Feedback after members have endeavoured to help you is not only good manners it also helps others to know if a given solution was effective. Thanks.

So then I'm only left with capturing from TV or microphone.
Try the TV selection. Your device doesn't seem to have a TV tuner, so a TV would connect exactly like a VCR, and the device wouldn't know the difference.

And, "DV" usually refers to a Mini-DV camcorder, which would be hooked-up directly to the computer via firewire (You wouldn't need the analog-to-USB device for a Mini-DV camera.)

Roy: I did actually check whether the video capture device driver was still there or not before I even attempted to start the editing process and it WAS uninstalled. But I reinstalled it and that's when I started to encounter all these problems.

Doug: No luck with the TV. I can't even get an image to show up on my screen.

NOTE: I went to http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... ht=160x120 because it seemed like the user was experiencing problems similar to mine. I followed all the steps that vidoman posted and unfortunately it still didn't work. It was still capturing in 160x120 with no audio. Very ugly.

WOO HOO!! I figured it out fellas. Thanks a bunch for the help though.

I'm not exactly even sure what I did. I just went to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Devices and reinstalled a few things and then POOF! Everything is working perfectly now and I can capture in larger resolutions.

As a follow up, I am guessing something installed an disabled your drivers, or what? Would be helpfull down the road for someone else that may have this problem.

Software is kind of like nuclear waste, it stays around for a long time..

Sure. I'm actually not too sure which of my several actions make the difference. But I basically went into 'Device Manager' and saw that a few of my drivers had that yellow exclamation icon, meaning that it's probably not working. These drivers included my Video Advantage USB driver, so I had that re-installed (for the second time) and the yellow icon went away. I then also noticed a yellow icon next to my USB hubs. So I did the same thing and it re-checked all my USB ports and went away.

I went back into VS9 and everything worked perfect. The bottom line being... check your drivers people!

Hope this helps someone in the future!
