transcoding while capturing video

Post by wettie »

hi!
how can i set that transcoding of video be made after i capture the whole video?

my problem really is that when i am capturing my movie from my videocam, it automatically transcodes after 1-2 mins of video captured. i think that is the reason why my movie always has this slight flicker error (i can't explain it but i think it jumps). so i wanted to transcode the whole video at the end.

please help. thank you very much!

Since you don't tell us what you are capturing, from what, using what, let alone in what format, it is virtually impossible to offer advice.

Can we assume you are capturing mpeg-2 format from some source (analogue? digital?)

If capturing from a digital DV camcorder, you should be capturing in DV format using Firewire. No alternative. Capturing to mpeg-2 in such circumstances is possible if your computer is up to the job, but evidently yours might just not have enough power to do the job smoothly.

But if this is indeed what you are doing, then try capturing in DV format, then do your edits, then select Share > Create Video File > DVD, and this will convert your captured and edited video into DVD compatible mpeg-2.

Much safer to do it this way.

thanks for your reply!

i am using a DV camcorder and chose DVD format. is it why there are errors? what's the difference (resolution of the video) betweeh DVD and DV format? if i choose DV format in capturing, it will no longer transcode the video?

i find it time consuming...i mean, hours (1-2 hours) of converting it to DVD afterwards. then hours again for creating/burning the video onto DVD disc...do you think so?

thank you very much! i really appreciate your help!

If you follow Ken's advice, then start a new project with an empty timeline, and immediately go to the Chare/Create Disc module. Add your compliant mpeg file from the step above, and hit the little gear icon (bottom left), make sure "do not convert compliant mpeg files" is checked, and this should build your dvd without re-encoding (as long as you only add some menus/chapters in the Disc Creation module).

Hi Wettie

When you capture your video you may receive a notice that the system is ¡¥emptying/purging the transcode buffer¡¦ I cannot remember the exact terms used.

When you capture to Dvd or Mpeg the video has to be re-coded during capture, if your pc is unable to keep up with the incoming data then capture is paused whilst the transcode buffer is emptied. Please fill in your system details from your profile tab at the top of this forum.

If you captured using Firewire IE1394 connection to DV format, then the video data is copied/transferred to the pc, no re-coding, no transcode buffer problems.
What you have in the camera is what you get on the pc. Dv-Avi This is about 13Gb per hour. This is the best way to transfer video from a digital camera (DV)

Hope this Helps

I would make good use of the available tutorials. This one is very good.

Take notice capturing in the DV format is the most reliable method.

thank you very much! this really helps!

i have another question though, :?:
- finished editing and creating a video DVD 4:3 format file
- when i remember that i should cut something from the video...i dragged the video file i just created onto the timeline, then cut the scenes i want to delete...
- my problem is: when i create a video file again, it only creates the first cut part of the movie.

thank you so much for your help!

Hi

After removing the frames go to Share-Create Video File-Same as First clip.

This will produce a new file containing all you see in the timelines.
