FRAPS

Has anyone been successful in pulling in a FRAPS video into VS10? I get a message that says, "The contents of these files is unreadable". Yet, I can import them into Windows Movie Maker and they work fine.

Oh no you didn't Guy?? I can't believe you downgraded to Vista

I think that't your problem, V--I--S--T--A. I'm not sure but I think it may have something to do with it using VFW codecs, or WDM not being supported in Vista.
* Windows Vista and the Windows logo are trademarks or registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries
* This Update Pack is for Ulead® VideoStudio® 10/10 Plus (BOX, ESD, UPG, and activated TBYB) version.
* This Update Pack cannot be uninstalled.
* Since Video for Windows (VFW) is not supported in Vista, VFW codecs such as Indeo, Cinepak are not supported in Vista. The video content files provided by VideoStudio will now be encoded using .WMV instead of Indeo codecs.
* Some 3D transition effects that won¡¦t be supported on Vista are removed from current release, including: Flying Board, Flying Cube, Flying Flip, Flying Fold, and Folding Box. Some templates under "Album", "Flash Light" and "Mask" transition effect are also not supported.
* WDM devices are not supported by Vista. Thus, not supported by VideoStudio.
* WMV and MPEG 4 format CAPTURE is not supported.
* MOV and MPEG 4 formats are not supported in this version.
* WinDVD 7, PocketDV show, and Cool3D are not supported.

Yep, I "upgraded" to Vista and love it. IMO it is the the best O/S MS has released.

As for non-codec support; that can't be it because Windows Movie Maker works fine.

I don't use Frapps, so I don't know what codec it uses, so which one does Frapps use?

I also have Vista (home premium) on a new computer, and like Guy, rather like it. However, I have not even tried to load VS on it until this sort of problem is sorted out.

Guy's comments about WMM working with FRAPS in Vista, however, reminded me of a question I asked in another thread, and which, as far as I am aware, was not answered. I am wondering therefore whether Guy might be able to provide some information (not having had time to test it myself as yet on my Vista computer!)

Does the latest Movie Maker capture in DV format as well as WMP? Or is it now limited only to WMP? (My own view is that it would indeed be a shame if support for DV was dropped.)

The link to Guy's original question is, of course, whether he can capture his FRAPS capture in WMM in DV format, for high quality editing in VS10 or MF6; or whether he is stuck with WMP for such a FRAPS capture...

Vidoman:

Fraps has its own codec in an avi wrapper. It is only slightly compressed because there isn't time to encode video while you are playing a game. The impact to performance would be too much. It is the most widely used screen capture utility for 3D games. (www.fraps.com)

The clips are captured at 1024 x 768, Bit Rate: 28115 kbps, 30 frames/second, Audio: 1411 kbps.

Ken:

When I get a chance I will try to capture via DV in Movie Maker to see.

Thanks for providing that information.. I don't play video games (don't have enough time) so that's probably why I've never looked into using it..;)

I use fraps regurlarly and it loads into vs10 fine.
Fraps has to be installed on your system with vs10 in order for it to work.

I have had problems loading other avi footage for no apparent reason previously, including fraps, which I couldn't locate the reason why.
I reinstalled all my other codec packs and still nothing.

At the same time, my 5.1 and additional overlay track options disappeared from VS10 and I finished up reformatting the whole system.

All is ok now.

It seems to be hit and miss. Some work and some don't. I now have VS11 so I'll see if that makes a difference.
