Ulead isn't finding the video codec. Also need burning help

Post by bradleyz32 »

I am trying to burn a video to a DVD, but Ulead Videostudio 10 cannot find the codec "Vids:X264 decompressor". I did a search for that and downloaded the codec online, but I don't know how to install it. Ulead will load the video file and shows the correct length, but it won't show any actual video.

Also, how do you get a video file that is larger than one DVD to simply fit as much as it can on the first DVD, and then put the rest of the information on the 2nd or 3rd DVDs? I'm trying to put a long tennis match to a DVD, and its a pain to edit it each time and then try to guess whether it will fit. There must be a better way.

First, the X264 decompressor, as its name implies, is associated with H264 mpeg-4 video, and VS10 does not appear to be able to handle video encoded to H264; or at least not handle it properly.

Second, it flows from the foregoing, that the X264 decompressor is probably not meant to work with VS10. I believe it is aimed more at programs like ffdshow or VirtualDub which do in fact work with H264.

Ok, how do put this match onto a DVD in video format? Will those programs let me change the file so that VS10 will understand it? I downloaded ffshow and don't see how to do anything with it. I can play the video just fine using vlc media player. Its putting it on a DVD that's giving me the problem.

What you are needing to do is convert the H264/mpeg-4 video to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 with a program that can handle H264. There is a free program called SUPER which I believe can do this conversion. However, I am currently at my beach house and don't have the URL where you can download SUPER to hand. However a Google search should find it...

You need to work out in advance what your bitrates should be -- based on your acceptable "quality" level, and the duration of your video. Then decide if you must go to multiple discs or double-layer, etc...

Here is one of my favorite bitrate calculators: Link to Bitrate Calculator
