aaaahhhh the ole' widescreen thang again!

Post by lakewud »

I know I know..been here a thousand times, and read countless threads regarding the whole widescreen debate.

My problem is this, having previously made a little project, burned it etc etc...happy with it. But, originally I had wanted to make the opening few minutes widescreen and then the rest in normal screen. This I couldnt seem to achieve, aside from a cheat - blacking out the top n bottom etc. I was using VS9 btw.

Ok, so ignored the widescreen and as I mentioned, burn my project, happy with the result. BUT, once Id made all my copies, thought I would just try and create the parts I wanted widescreen, so I copied the first part of my project in widescreen, put it into a seperate folder, rended etc...and added to the project window when i was about to burn. So, I now had two files, the first one being my already rended widescreen, and the 2nd one being the main project, which i didnt choose to already save and render ( in effect i just pressed the 'create disk' option - which is the option i like despite what ive read on here ) . It worked of course but at a price...the quality was noticably different. The widescreen part of my project was definately worse than the rest of the project. Is this because I may of rended it twice or something having had to save it first?

So - now at a loss. Im starting another project. Again I want the opening few minutes widescreen and the rest of the project normal screen. Have played about with it ( now using VS10 ) tried capturing the footage I want in widescreen - changing project settings etc - to make only that footage widescreen..but it doesnt work..well it does..but all the captured footage changes to widescreen..says something about changing the cache or something.

So, how do i do it? At a loss.

I render 2 separate videos. One widescreen 16:9 and the other 4:3.
After the 2 mpeg files are created I start a new project, goto "Share -> Create Disk" import both the video's and burn the dvd.
Make sure do not convert dvd mpeg compliant files is checked ON.

The only thing you have to decide is the project 16:9 or 4:3. That depends on your target device (the TV).

Make sure when you go into the burning module it's from and Empty Timeline. You don't want to carry any videos over to the burning module from the timeline or they will be re-encoded.

Go into the burning module from an empty timeline. Import the videos into the burning module.

Try this......

1. Place your entire video onto the video track. Decide where you want to move from widescreen to normal and make a cut - but 1 second further to the right.

2. Drag that left hand clip up to the library.

3. Now use the undo function to remove your cut.

4. Make another cut, this time at the point where you want to move from widescreen to normal. Delete the left hand clip.

5. Swap to thumbnail view and drag the saved clip from step 2 down to the left of the existing clip.

6. Apply a suitable transition of 1 second.

Thanks for the replies. Because of past experiance, hesitant to use the way Etech suggested, not happy with the quality of pre-rendering etc.

Liking more the practical SJJ idea. However, as usual, come unstuck. For a start you didnt mention when I tranferred my original 4:3 clips to widescreen. Or are you assumming I must bring them into VS already in widescreen ( the ones I want to make widescreen ) and the parts I want normal size I must capture them with normas size settings in preferencs?

Tell me, what does it mean when, for example, I chance project settings to widescreen and the pictures Ive captuered appear to be in like a black box, around the edge? When i change preferences it does come up with a box saying 'cachs setting changed etc?

Sorry I missed a small step out.

When you have prepared the clips the way I mentioned, select the first clip (which is in 4.3) and then click the [Attribute] tab and you will see a check box to 'distort clip'.

Your selected clip will now appear on the preview window rather like it does when you place it onto an overlay track, you can now resize the clip.
Drag it over to the left and upwards leaving it where you would expect the upped letter boxing to appear. grab the bottom right and drag it, at this time it maintains the 4.3 ratio. Stop when you reach where you want the bottom letter boxing to appear. Now grab the right hand edge and drag it across the screen to widen your clip.

So to recap, everything starts off in 4.3, no need to do an intermediate render.

Hi

When you view the preview screen, not all the screen is used, especially when working with widescreen.
By default, the background is black, if you change the background colour you will identify the active frame.

Read my guide to '16:9 a look at widescreen' from the link below.
This shows what a 4:3 video looks like in a 16:9 frame
