Right lets turn this thread on its head. Lots of people keep asking about MediaStudio 9.
Lets pretend Ulead have made a big announcement that they are thinking of developing MSP9 and have asked the members of this forum what they would like to see included in it.
You may be surprised that upon inspection most of what you want exists in MSP8. I will accept Vista is missing but that is not an insurmountable problem, you can always dual boot to XP or even keep a dedicated XP machine for video editing.
So...... what's missing?

off the top of my head, and the only real complaints I have now- I'd LOVE to stay with MSpro as others have said, we've tried the rest and don't like them, but need new modern features! :
In general, add in all the new cool/modern features from Videostudio11+ and DVDMF6+ !
* Better HDV support: (ALL Ulead programs need this!!)
- M2T native capture/edit (no conversion), plus AVCHD
- HDV/AVCHD metadata support (time-of-day) eg allowing auto scene split like DV), "scan HDV tape" for logging etc, record back to tape w/ metadata intact (no data lost after edit)
-- cool if it could support DVD subtitle auto-generation from HDV timestamp, like DVDMF6+ from DV
- HD preview? not sure how works; over Firewire, or via gfx card HD out, or?
* modern HW support:
- Core2Duo optimization/acceleration and Vista OS support;
- GPU accel: would be even better if could support GPUs for render eg HD acceleration like nVidia PureVideo etc (I'm surprised actually they aren't arguing over conflicting trademarks for PureHD(tm) already)
* better integration w/ DVD authoring (w/ DVDWS3 of course
)
- pass on named bookmarks, not just bookmark, from mpg render
- bundled DVDMF has HD support (HD-DVD/BD author/burn, HD on DVD4/9, etc.)
- DVD vob/VR capture note and retain chapter marks, eg capture entire program/title if selected, but flag the chapter marks in timeline (and back again to author)
- edit/define subtitles to pass to authoring (esp if auto from HDV/DV metadata timestamps as above)
- better "ad detective" feature to remove TV ads; VideoRedoPlus one is MUCH much smarter/nicer/easier to work with

Is the glass half full or half empty?
No matter how much moaning and whining we do here, at the end of the day Corel Digital Media is a profit making Company. We forum members do not know how much money is required to be invested in the development of a new upgrade. We have no idea how successful the returns are on those investments in sales. It would be financial suicide for a company to operate at a loss.
Corel Digital Media - if they have any sense - are not going to come out with any bold statements like, sorry guys we are are ditching this that and the other product. They retain copyright ownership of their products and no doubt at their regular board room meetings discuss the apparent state of the market. It would be wise for them - and any other profit making company - to keep their options open.
Now lets look at that glass again. I see it as being half full, this means I remain optimistic that a new version of MediaStudio and DVD Workshop will come along. Whether this is in a month, a year or five years - who knows.
So by being positive, lets show these men in dark suits sitting at those board room meetings that there is a need for new versions and what we would like to see included in them.

I'm a long-time MSP user and have stuck with it because I truly like it--the learning curve was not as high as many of the other products, but at the same time, has done everything I have needed it to do (without frequent crashing). Secondly, I am normally a "glass half-full" person.
However, since moving up to a HD camcorder several months ago, I have been less that thrilled with MSP 8 not being able to edit native m2t files. The proxy solution can truly slow down my creative process. So, lack of native m2t editing is my biggest complaint and the reason I'm truly considering switching to Premiere Pro CS3. I'm being tempted by the upcoming Adobe CS3 Production Premium and many of the programs that will come with it (especially Photoshop CS3, After Effects CS3 and OnLocation). Add Premiere Pro CS3's ability to edit native m2t files and I might have to switch. Of course, the CS3 Production Premium suite is not yet available. If when it is released, if interVideo/Ulead hasn't announced some upcoming improvements (including native m2t eding) my decision might be made for me. Again, remember, I'm a big MSP 8 fan.

Steve (sjj1805),
Meritoriously, I agree with you. No doubt, Media Studio Pro is the best program I ever knew. I am enthusiastic fun of this software, its style and relatively easy to operate, very logical style. Using from version 2.5 I have not bed orientation how big progress Ulead did to newest version 8. And I had hope they will still on top in competition with programs other companies. Now days, when Ulead was acquired by Corel things, looks to me, changed rapidly. My disappointment is because our forum and our wishes were disregarded. Ulead/Corel totally ignoring us, potentially future customers. ANY WORD (!) from them, such, e.g. ¡§We consider..¡¨, ¡§We discussing about..¡¨, etc. We need some confirmed hope! Look on Topic ¡§MSP* and Vista¡¨ how many people read this. More than 8200! This is record. I don¡¦t believe, that Ulead/Corel not reading this forum. And what happens? NOTHING! That is my bitter conclusion: They don¡¦t care about us.
Sorry, my glass is still half empty.
Regards

I am not (yet) fully surprised by the Corel's silence. I have already wrote that they may be still focusing on internal matters, such as reorganising themselves to generate synergies and reviewing the strategy (which is normal following a merger). It is in our own interest that they do things right (product, technical and financial).
I am very pleased with MSP 8 and would love to keep it provided that it advances technologically. I would like to add to the wishing list a"image/canvas size" functionality (this is not cropping)
However, Corel, be aware that the temperature is rising and soon all the glass water will be gone and then we will no longer be debating half full/empty glass. It is about time to say something about the future of MSP8, including Vista compatibility.

OK, enough what we want new in MSP, how about, what you really like about it?
For instance.. I love the fact that all the OTHER packages "talk to" MSP. From CG Infinity and Video Paint, to, Cool Production Studio and Photo Impact. Now, that in my book, is cool. Even Video Studio.. How many other software products have THAT many support apps for one and another?
What's even cooler about it is, you have to understand a little bit about "windows" programming. And it's easy to figure out. Why? because the "premise" behind all Windows apps is a "general look and feel".
Don't get me wrong, not all Windows programs look and feel the same, but, Ulead, does. That is by the book Windows programming.
My disclaimer..:
(granted not all Windows applications, herein after refereed to as apps, deserve the credit as being worthy software, hence, this disclaimer being that not all applications run as intended, or within right, actually work).
My point is, all the apps are fluid, and work with each other, which is so cool, my hats of to ulead and the sale to Corel..
My hope is that they make it an even better program, by, at least adding multi cam, and fixing and adding all the above posted suggestions

I agree.
I used to shy away from MediaStudio 7 in my early days, I was was used to VideoStudio and its user friendly interface, but at the time I found it difficult grasping the concept of plonking a Video on VA and another on VB and the transitions on another track in between. (Of course it all makes sense to me now as I am more experienced). Then there were all those other tracks V1 V2 V3 and so one, even more called Aa Ab A1 A2 and so on.
In my early days it was very confusing. As I say they all make sense now as I am more experienced, but this was the confusion faced by new users of that product.
I was over the moon when MediaStudio 8 was released and its interface was much more like that I had grown accustomed to with VideoStudio.
This means that anyone who is experienced with VideoStudio could very quickly upgrade to MediaStudio and work out how to use it.
The MSP8 interface is so much easier for a new user to understand and learn.
I have out of curiosity looked at other NLE editors and they are so alien from the interface that I am now accustomed to that it would be like learning a foreign language. The only one that comes anywhere near the same interface is Cyberlink Power Director. Inspection of products like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premier reminded me of my first encounter with MediaStudio 7. In those days I tended to do most of my work with VideoStudio and only do small bits and pieces with MediaStudio 7 when it was something impossible or hard to achieve in VideoStudio such as multiple PIP's or moving paths.
I would dread going to another manufacturers NLE for that very reason.
The ease of use is mirrored throughout the other major Ulead programs
VideoStudio, MovieFactory and DVD Workshop. learn one Ulead product and you can very quickly pick up how to use one of the others. In fact when it comes to DVD creation I didn't have to write much in this tutorial
MF: Authoring a DVD because after mentioning a couple of small items specific to MovieFactory all I had to do was then point the reader to the one I had previously created for VideoStudio!
The same is true of DVD Workshop 2, it is easy to learn and use.
Grab hold of a copy of a competitors product that performs the same task and you soon realise what it is you like about Ulead products.

That appears to be the end of a great product."Many features and functionality of MediaStudio Pro and DVD Workshop are being rolled into the consumer products [DVD MovieFactory and VideoStudio], making them more powerful, but still easy to use," said Tobie Openshaw, a product manager at Corel. According to Openshaw, MediaStudio Pro and DVD Workshop would be discontinued in the near future, but did not give a date.

Jerry,
I know you are a journalist and this is not a knock at you but......
From my experience as a Police Officer who has attended various incidents and then read about them in the newspaper I had to ask myself several times if the incident I had previously attended was the same one being reported in the news.
You cannot believe everything that gets written. Things get twisted turned and buttered up.
I recall whilst at school we heard a story about a General in a war in the days before radio. They relied upon messengers on horseback.
he told the first messenger to pass on a message "Send reinforcements we are going to advance" The first messenger had to pass this onto to a second who would pass it onto a third etc.
At the other end of the line the message now read
"Send four and sixpence we're going to a dance."
Firstly I would be very surprised if anyone in a management position at any profit making company would boldly announce "We are discontinuing this product"
Instead they have two options.
1. Sit on their copyright so that at some time in the future they can resurrect the product in the light of the ever changing circumstances and state of the market.
2. Sell. They can offer the copyright to someone else - perhaps the highest bidder.
If Corel have decided to shelve (not discontinue) the products it is because they are making a loss. They have to take into account development costs against anticipated profit margins.
I for one will be taking that report with a pinch of salt.
