It's tough to be positive when you've followed Corel's track record.

I mean it's just an ongoing saga about questionable leadership and execution.

Have a look at the Wikipedia entry for Corel:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corel

No, this doesn't mean the company is forever doomed to repeat past mistakes.

But... you have to wonder.

They took a leading desktop publishing program -- VENTURA -- and lost its share of the market so quickly it was breathtaking.

Now there's a relatively new management team.

So how do they treat the customers of their newly acquired Ulead?

They... hmmm.... keep them in the dark for weeks and months about the future of key products?

Is that a positive sign?

I'm not so sure.

By the way, I've used Corel Draw and Corel Photo-Paint for years.

(I even own Ventura!)

I abandoned Ventura when Corel made an unholy mess of it trying to convert it for Windows 95, making it totally unusable. As a DOS application, it was wonderful.

I have almost abandoned Corel WP, having used it from DOS days. I'm now using Word 2007. The only WP feature I miss is Reveal Codes, although MS have made a small effort in that direction, but not enough.

I haven't entirely abandoned Corel Draw!, but I prefer PI over PhotoPaint.

Corel is WELL down in my prestige stakes, only a shade higher than Microsoft and Adobe.

@Jerry,

Out of curiosity, what features in those Apple applications are missing from Ulead's programs :?: (I'm sure there are some, as that's true about almost all software, I'm just wondering what I am missing now that might be good to have in the future).

Thanks,
George

Just for ha ha's, I went to the main Corel website.. http://apps.corel.com/lp/bundles/4398/index.htm

What did I find? Nothing about MSP..

Hey, help my old fading memory, what was the first original networking software called for PC's? Who bought the rights to it? and Who actually owns Corel?

Corel is still largely owned by Vector Capital and Corel is also listed on the NASDAQ and the company's stock is traded publicly.

At least, that's what I've read.

For one, Final Cut Pro will edit just about anything... even the very high end professional HD formats such as XDCAM HD by Sony, DVCPro HD by Panasonic, etc.

Final Cut Pro -- like MediaStudio Pro -- can edit long GOP natively instead of forcing the user to waste time TRANSCODING long GOP formats using so-called "intermediate codecs."

This, in my opinion, is the great weakness of Vegas by Sony.

Vegas can't natively edit and then Smart Render long GOP.

MediaStudio Pro can natively edit and Smart Render long GOP, but that support is limited to the consumer-level HDV format and MediaStudio Pro, as far as I know, does not support professional HD formats such as XDCAM HD by Sony or DVCPro by Panasonic.

APPLE's editors are all native QuickTime editors.

QuickTime is based on MPEG-4.

So it would seem to me that APPLE will have an advantage when it comes to the editing of forthcoming MPEG-4 formats such as "AVC-Intra" by Panasonic and the consumer "AVCHD" format.

Sticking with MSP

Post by iafilm »

For the iafilm group, the combination of MSP plus plug-ins by Nick Jushchyshyn has given us a good-enough greenscreen/bluescreen compositing system to be able to do no-budget fantasy and sci-fi shorts. Trial versions of more expensive software have not given results as good as "MSP + Nick". That "king hit" is a compelling reason for us to stick with MSP for the foreseeable future.

Example video clip (1 meg):

"Moving Path" also seems to be very good for this price point.

Nick is a great guy.

I expect him to go places in the video/film world.

Yes, I agree there's still a lot of time left for users of MediaStudio Pro 8.

I know some individuals who are still using version 5!

While it is true that Sony Vegas does not have smart render, it is NOT true that vegas can not work natively with long gop... In fact, it captures and edits the M2T file directly, while MSP captures only as MPG

I like editing with Vegas better, but Avid Liquid however, is the best bet for working with long gop. Liquid was the first to introduce HD long gop editing in its native form.... and this was quite some time ago. Liquid has always been further advanced in this area as opposed to others. It is however, a fairly complex program and requires a lot of reading!

That all well written but so fare we have spoken about the MS and Apple platforms.

What about LINUX based video editing software?
Is there any experience on these ones?

Ah man if we lose MSP then right now I have no idea what editing program i'd jump onto. I've tried a little bit of Vegas and Premiere in the past but preferred the workflow of MSP 8. I'd consider Final Cut Pro except for the fact that i'd have to jump onto apple and buy new workstations. Either way, if I jump to a new editing program i'll have to invest time to learn it and it'll definetly be a step backwards since i've invested so much time into MSP. With all things going well (hardware staying stable), I could picture myself going another 2-3 years without an upgrade but if the worst case scenario happens where MSP is cut and VS does not approach the features of MSP i'd prefer to jump on and learn another program as soon as possible.

Time to do some research!
