PANASONIC USB CAPTURE PROBLEM

Post by Peter »

I have a Panasonic NV-GS400 video camera and have used it sucessfully to capture with both video studio 8 and DVD workshop using the firewire IEEE 1394 port..
However I have recently been trying to use it using the USB ports in the camera and in the computer but neither video studio 8 or DVD Workshop will recognise the device .
I get an ERROR message saying "CANNOT SWITCH TO CAPTURE MODE " your capture driver is either corrupt or not available !.

I have uninstalled the driver a few times and it's fine .
The camera IS recognised perfectly well in the USB ports by NERO Vision Express !!.
so it must be a problem perculiar to ULead software .
Can anyone help ?

Although not familiar with your camera, could it be that the Firewire port is the one meant for _video_ transfer, and the USB is meant only to transfer still images? Is it a USB 1 or 2 connection? If it is USB 1, then it is simply not fast enough to transfer video. What do you transfer when Nero recognises it?

You likely also have to change the capture plugin if you previously used the DV connection. I have no experience with that camcorder (although I ordered one earlier today, so stay tuned :P ), but you'll likely have to switch to the DirectShow capture plugin.

Yes in answer to both questions.
1) Yes it does indeed record the video throught Nero so the USB is to be used for video transfer (USB 2).
2) I have tried all the available "Capture Plug Ins" including the Direct show capture

But why would you want to transfer using USB if you have a firewire connection which works well - no reason to it - remember that even if you get a half decent transfer a USB connection cannot control your camera functions and you will have to do it all manually - a nightmare.

Hi
Well it's interesting that you sought to comment on "Why" I want to capture with USB which is not as good as 1394 IEEE rather than answer my question !!.
Anyhow there are 2 reasons
1) my camera has a problem with IEEE output and is waiting to be fixed so I wanted to edit some tapes i had before sending it in for repair.
2) and more improtantly. The USB function works fine capturing into NeroVision and to the supplied panasonic "Motion Studio" software.capturing from both without any problem.
However it does NOT capture with any ULead product software so there must be a compatability problem with this camera and/or Drivers when using ULead software and it require a fix because it should work !.

I just purchased the panasonic gs400 and have the same problem. I do not have firewire. All the Ulead docs say that it will capture using USB but the camcorder is not recognized at all. Motion DV, Windows Movie Maker, and NeoDVDStandard all work perfectly and recognize the GV400 but no VideoStudio 9. I have sent a request to tech support for help. We'll see what they have to say.
