VideoStudio 10 Plus won't open
Hello gang. I'm back with a new old problem. It started when for no reason at all after weeks of trouble free operation (a couple of years with ULEAD) the program wouldn't open and I'd get the message:
"The security information is invalid or has been modified. The program will be terminated." BUT WAIT! That's not the problem.
I've seen that a lot up here. I did what other before have done. A complete uninstall per instructions up here and instructions I got directly from tech support and a clean reinstall and now when I tried to open VS10+ nothing happened. (I had blocked uvPL.exe on startup so I tried to start it and I got the old message:
"The security information is invalid or has been modified. The program will be terminated."
I am in the middle of a project again so I went crazy - I used System Mechanic 7 to select the file, vstudio.exe, and systematically go through and remove the folder - all files in the folder and any and all links, shortcuts, reg entries etc that were associated with it. I then used two different registry cleaners to go through and wipe out any registry entries that were left behind. I then cleaned out any caches, temp files and folders, etc. I then went through the registry with TuneUp Utilties RegEdit and manually removed any and all registry entries with vstudio or VideoStudio in it. There were some remaining entries.
I then reinstalled (I am using the TBYB version).
RESULT: There are no error messages but VideoStudio still will not open. I watched the startup with sysinternals' ProcessExplorer and I saw that uvPL.exe launches and then shuts down in a second. (Procexp is just a free program, don't think I have any idea what I'm doing.)
Tech Support stopped responding after they told me it's my computer's fault and I need to reinstall Windows - meanwhile I have run every disgnostic program I can get my hands on and there doesn't seem to be a problem and everything else functions.
I have DVDMovieFactory5plus installed and it runs fine - I just can't do the editing and other such that I need on it.
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with 2.5GB RAM, P4 3.0Ghz, 1.5TB RAID0 external and 160GB internal with 1TB and 100 GB free respectively and nVidia GE force 5200... I don't know... it's not the computer, I have used VS10 since it first came out and then upgraded to 10+ and though this happened once before, that and anything else has always been fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling.
I wonder if I do that drastic uninstall and cleanup again but this time also include MF5+ if that will matter - I did try that earlier with the simple uninstall instructions and it didn't affect anything.
Also I have asked tech support for a link to a FULL version not the TBYB version to install because... well, you just never know - but it has been a week with no response.
Has ANYONE had this or similar and had it be this resistant? How was it solved? I can't believe I can't edit on my computer anymore. What would happen if I tried another program, if it would work - then it wouldn't necessarily be my machine. Is that what it will come to? I left ROXIO for the much better ULEAD but I still have those discs. (I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I just really wonder why a program will suddenly not function, not even open, and if this is a system-wide failure of some sort or if I can just go buy VEGAS or something and get one with it. Meanwhile, DVD MovieFactory 5 Plus just hums along...)
Thanks for the time.
Jeff

You know, I think this started happening about a month ago (or less?) right after that huge XP security update that happened before this most recent one last week. I woke up and there were a half dozen or more updates to install.
(It's hard to know when these updates happen when I'm editing because I close down the Internet connection to shut down the firewall and anti-virals et al and I can leave it that way for days.)
I had trouble with both DVDMF5plus and VS10plus giving me the "Security Information invalid or modified..." Uninstalling and reinstalling fixed DVDMF but not VS - after reading through a few posts, I also notified tech support immediately. So much time has passed that I lost the association - but I've been wracking my brain trying to think what it was I may have changed. Did I do something with a registry cleaner, did I install anything new or update something I already had? The overnight MS security update totally escaped me. Right until I read BlueMax' post. I misread it the first time I thought you said you had been using it and it just stopped opening. You said you just downloaded it, but it still inspired my memory.
I'm certain that the only thing that changed while I was working with VS10+ was that after being off line for a few days, I logged back online at some point and came back the next morning with my OS updated and my ULEAD products refusing to run.
Still, people aren't writing in in droves with the same problem. So this may be a red herring.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Easter holiday and that this is the first problem you can't wait to address when you return to the wonderful world of home video.

The error message is normally associated with a Try Before You Buy version that has expired or an attempt made to bypass the 30 day limit.
Obviously in your case this does not apply as you appear to have purchased an activation key.
I would try the following first:
Troubleshooting Guide
If these steps fail to solve the problem then check your Windows XP security settings in case they have become corrupted and your XP User Account does not have the necessary read/write permissions. Try running with an Administrator Account.
If that fails then you will need to complete a tech support form

RE: VS10 Plus Won't Launch
I have exactly the same problem. Until a month ago, my downloaded and purchased copy of VS10 Plus worked just fine. Then, when I tried to open it this weekend, I couldn't get it to launch at all. The exec vstudio.exe starts, then almost immediately closes.
When I tried to download an update from the web site (but not the Vista SP), it told me I didn't have VS10 installed.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice; once as is, the other a completely clean reinstallation. No change in behavior.
I am operating with Windows XP, SP 2, and automatic updates. The only change other than automatic updates is that I have recently installed Avast Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm firewall.
Any ideas on what's causing the problem?

Did you try uninstalling these and then try VS, or possibly trying a System Restore? The only change other than automatic updates is that I have recently installed Avast Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm firewall.

YES! Me too. I forgot - on one attempt to reinstall, the new Service Pack did that exact thing to me. It told me I didn't have VS10+ installed. At first I thought that I had downloaded the wrong SP for my TBYB version. (Oh wait, did I include that in my original post up there?)
But also, even though I didn't install a new anti-virus, my existing CounterSpy upgraded from ver 1.5 to 2.0 just prior to this. Still, if it was that, I didn't see anything nor can I imagine what it might have removed or what it might be blocking that would have anything to do with VS10+ (though it and others used to "scream at the top of their lungs" about msxml3sp2 in DVD Movie Factory.)
I sent a second pleading email to tech support asking to get a link to the non-tbyb version so that I could try installing that to see what happens and haven't heard a thing yet.
SORT OF HAPPY ENDING:
Finally, in other news, my computer suddenly refused to restart because of a constantly changing corrupt system file. (Repair it and suddenly another new one would claim to be bad.) In areas West of the Rockies and South of Central Valley, we have a company that comes to you and vows to Make Your Computer Work or you don't pay. It was like one of those bad B-Movie Gypsy Fortune Tellers: "Keep your money..."
My video deadline loomed then passed, so in desperation, I wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled everything.
All is calm now. Everything works and I have had no further trouble. (I think the program is faster, but it could be me) As much as I would like to hate ULEAD Tech Support - they still have not responded to my plea for a link to the other full version - their fall back position: reformat, reinstall - may actually have been the only correct solution. (Of course, that pretty much would fix anything but...) And their lack of further correspondence could be their overriding confidence in me as a long time user and their desire to have me discover things for myself so I better learn. Teach a man to fish and all that.
I wish I had found a better solution to offer everyone, but there it is. GOOD LUCK ALL. I will keep coming back to see if anyone figures this thing out.

Maybe that was the root of your problem?my computer suddenly refused to restart because of a constantly changing corrupt system file. (Repair it and suddenly another new one would claim to be bad.)

You know it's possible you have a virus or simply a bad disk.SORT OF HAPPY ENDING:

When windows says the security information is invalid they mean the executable file itself has be altered in some way. Sometimes this alteration can only occur in memory (if a virus is running). Or, another program is conflicting and causing this. Somethings up with your system that's affecting the files. Usually it's data errors on the harddisk.

I have to respond to the "backups are important."
One of the great joys of this new Maxtor 1.5TB drive I recently popped for, besides having all my DV footage on the disc at one time (which is unbelievably fantastic and is worth the pain of carrying a credit card balance), is the "One Touch" backup function.
(To edit you really need to set it up for RAID0 which prevents using one of the drives inside as a realtime backup - but it comes with a fine enough backup program by Retrospect.) Before this whole mess I had backed up my entire hard drive on a whim. It wasn't a planned act. Good thing, because I had little worry then about reformatting and reinstalling everything...
For some reason, though, from the first signs of this problem until the end, this has been a comedy of bad breaks an errors.
When I reinstalled the Retrospect Software, I fully expected to just hit "Restore" or "Rollback" button and be back where I was in no time. Except after reinstalling, the "restore" and "rollback" options were grayed out. When I engaged the software, the very first thing it did was immediately start backing up my new drive (with nothing on it) and overwriting the backup files on the Maxtor drive that I had intended to restore from.
No matter what I did, I couldn't stop it! There was so little on my my reformatted drive that the backup occurred well before normal reaction time.
But you're right - something was wrong -probably in the OS - if not a virus, then files that had been corrupted by a virus or something (maybe my girlfriend vacuuming with the vacuum plugged into my power strip while the computer was processing video?)
Whatever, it worked out finally except I feel like a vacation now.
