Cannot capture from Canon HV20 HDV camcorder

Post by LSHorwitz »

Has anybody found a way to directly capture from the Canon HV20 HDV camcorder into MF6+ or VS10+ ?

The capture option does not show up for an HDV camcorder at all, although Sony HC3 and other Sony HDV camcorders) workj fine.

Thankjs in advance for any ideas other than doing an external capture with HDSplit or some other external capture tool.

larry,
I'm seriously thinking about getting a Canon HV20 and also using the Movie Maker. If you find anything out please post your findings, or I will have to find another software.
Thanks

Hi Jake,
The Ulead HV10 Canon patch for VideoStudio 10 fixes both VS10 Plus as well as MF6 Plusfor the HV20 camcorder as well. I am entirely delighted that both programs are fixed with a simple 4 megabyte download. I am a bit surprised that MF6 Plus which only came out recently, long after the HV10 was introduced, still not only requires a patch to work with the HV20 but furthermore can only be installed if you also happen to own and have VideoStudio 10 installed. This is a real problem for MF6 Plus buyers who want to capture from their Canon camcorders and have no way to apply the patch unless they also own VideoStudio 10.

I guess you will see the fix in the update pack for DVDMF 6 months later.

I bet you're right.

I think it would be fair to warn owners of Canon HV10 and HV20 camcorders that MF6+ will NOT capture from them until Ulead does release the patch.

Try the modified HDVCap.dll

Post by snoops »

Larry,
I don't know if the VS10 Canon patch adjusts any entries in an INI file when it runs, but aside from the setup stuff and bitmaps it actually only contains a small modified HDVCap.dll (52KB).

Jake or someone that installed the VS10 update could send you the file, and you could simply try replacing the one found somewhere in your C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\...

BTW you cannot simply extract the content of such a patch with normal software like WinZip because it is an InstallShield executable. I wrote my own code to do this for personal use and to solve problems earlier than the supplier does, but it uses other tools... don't want to describe it here and don't want to publish it either.

Thanks snoops. My personal problem has been solved but perhaps others would find your approach useful.

BTW.....I, for one, would love to see what Installshield is doing before / during installations.....

Best,

Sorry, I mixed up the 2 names. Jake wanted the fix, you have VS10 and were able to install the patch.

The patch must do more than just the one file.
Pretty sure it also installs this file in the C:\Windows\Prefetch Directory.
The file is a binary file "JP06-0919-01_UVS10J_CANON_HDV-28C9FB56.pf"
It must do more, I don't think MF6 uses hdvcap.dll in it's standard module.
It is in the BD Recorder module.
VS10 reports version 2.0.0.2
MF6 BD Recorder is 2.0.0.1

Well, I just checked it again and like I said, aside from all the setup stuff there is only 1 small 52KB file HDVCap.dll. The patch is in 5 languages so some items, like the 900KB welcome BMP, are stored 5 times. That's why it is about 4MB in total, compressed.

I forgot to mention that I don't have MF6 or VS10 or a Canon camcorder. So I cannot test. Just trying to help.

My MF5+ has HDVCap.dll in its "Ulead BD DiscRecorder 2.5" program folder, a 2.0.0.2 version.
Looks like Ulead messed up something if MF6 was packaged with a 2.0.0.1. Maybe they need to check their build and versioning check-in procedures? This is not the first time newer software gets older version dll.

You cannot always rely on the version numbers with Ulead files. For example, the file in the patch is also 2.0.0.2 and even has the same special build description ([2,0,0,2] TimeProc()), but it is a completely different binary compared to MF5+.

I noticed the same in the version numbers.
I also forgot to put the filename in my previous post (DA!)
I'll edit that and fix it.

The file is a binary file "JP06-0919-01_UVS10J_CANON_HDV-28C9FB56.pf"
located in the C:\Windows\Prefetch Directory.

I also use HDVSplit to capture from HDV cameras.
There is also a reference to HDVSplit
HDVSPLIT.EXE-3A647DBA.pf
located in the C:\Windows\Prefetch Directory.

I don't see how a file located in the VS directory can be used by MF6+.
MF6+ also uses a different capturing module then VS does. Has been different since MF5.
My guess is it's this file "JP06-0919-01_UVS10J_CANON_HDV-28C9FB56.pf"

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I just bought MovieFactory 6 and it doesn't recognize my HV20. Has this issue still not been resolved? If it has, where can I go to get the patch fix?

Thanks in advance.
