I have a few files I would like to edit. The sound works fine when I use Windows Media player or something, but it wont play in VideoStudio 9. They are MPEG files. Any suggestions?

Thanks

If your version of Video Studio has the letters SE after it, then it is a crippled version. And if the audio on your video is Dolby, then it will not play since once of the crippled things in the program is the absence of Dolby.

SE versions are free, while Dolby requires a licence fee for every time it is included in a program. A software manufacturer is not going to pay a licence fee then give the program away free.

You can check the audio by right clicking on a video within Video Studio and looking at Properties.

Your options are to upgrade to the most recent version which includes the Dolby codecs. Or you could try a free AC-3 filter which you will find if you do a search of the www.videohelp.com site. That filter will at least allow you to import and play the Dolby. But when you edit the video, you have to output to a different audio format: LPCM or mpeg layer 2. The filter will in other words decode Dolby but won't encode it.

Please click here --> Image so that we can then view your system specifications.

If you have Windows XP then you also have built into it Windows Movie Maker. However.... as good as free programs are you get what you pay for.
This will not however cure your problem - as mentioned by Ken, if you have Dolby sound then with a free program you need to obtain a Dolby plug in. Those are NOT free. Dolby is an independant software company who do not give their products out for free. Any software manufacturer who uses Dolby has to pay royalties to Dolby to use their product.

Windows Movie Maker, as far as I am aware, does not edit mpegs -- only DV/avi and WMV.

As Steve has said, though, you are unlikely to find a free program that will edit video with Dolby audio.
