Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus crashing
Hello guys!
Finally got a full version of UVS 10 Plus that would work after the TBYB version wouldn't accept the license code. Now that I have it installed with the expansion pack, bonus pack, and SP1 I am experiencing crashes left and right. First I tried to capture some old VHS footage to my hard drive via my DVDXpressDX2. Upon selecting the 'record' icon (the camera) I had an instant crash before it would even recognize the capture device. So I switched my encoding device to the ConvertX Px-M402U and the capture mode did recognize the capture device but when I went to record the video it crashed displaying the usual Windows XP "Ulead has experienced a problem and needs to close..." So, I still have a copy of WinDVD on my computer and used that to capture the VHS footage onto my hard drive via the ConvertX capture device which it did in Mpeg2 format in an AVI wrap. I started using WinDVD to edit the footage but it is so much inferior to VideoStudio I couldn't take it anymore. I quit the WinDVD program and transferred the AVI file over to the UVS 10 Plus program which it did. But upon editing the footage I get occasional crashes when I cut footage. Any suggestions?

Did you remove the TBYB version first?
Perhaps you need to follow the clean re-install procedure

Did you experience any problems when you had the TBYB version installed?
When you captured via WinDVD and then imported that into VideoStudio could you let us have the various settings used - for example
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 4000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps

Hey sjj1805!
No, I really didn't experience any problem with the tbyb version. But then again, all I did was experiment with a simple title, chapters and burn with some MPEG-2 footage from my new Sony DHC-SR 300 video cam that my old version of VS9 SE couldn't handle due to the Dolby Digital 5.1. The burn was a success without a hitch.
Ok...here is the breakdown of how I recorded in WinDVD Creator 2:
Under "Record" - Use "MPEG 1 and MPEG 2" format with "DVD HQ" profile.
Under "Video Source" - "Composite Video"
Under "Video Standard" - "NTSC_M"
Under "Output Format" - "Dolby Digital"
Under "Automatic File Splitting" - "Max. space allowed by file system"
Type = MPEG - 2
Duration of recorded video is 0:59:34:01
Under "Video" - "Total Frames" = 107117
"Frame Rate" = 29.97 frames/second
"Frame Size" = 720x480
Under "Audio" - "Format" = 48000 Hz
"Sample Size" = 16 bits
"Channel" = Stereo
"Bitrate" = 384 kbps
Hope that helps sjj!
Let me know what you think as I pretty much did the capture with the auto settings of that program.

I have no idea what might be causing your crashes generally. However, in relation to your DX-2 device, Adstech is notorious for making hardware which can only work properly with their own software. The DX2 comes with the Adstech capture program, CapWiz, which does an excellent job. More to the point, it captures DVD-compatible mpeg-2. (BTW, I have never heard of mpeg-2 in an .avi wrapper!!!
)
I know that the DX2 usually also comes with VS9, which would lead you to think "well if it works with VS9, it will work with 10". Wrong. Adstech even tweaks VS9, I understand, so that it will work with the DX2.
So use CapWiz to capture, then open the resulting files in VS10 for editing.
I know nothing about the ConvertX device, so cannot comment on that.

Hey Ken!
Yes, I downloaded the capwiz 3.8 I believe it was from the url that ssj sent to me. I have captured some new footage off the same VHS tape (about 48 minutes) and am currently editing it. Crossing my fingers but so far so good. Thank both of you guys for pitching in...it is nice to get some help.
Have either of you worked with Adobe Premiere? I was thinking of an alternative program just in case VS 10 Plus won't work and I get really depressed.

Glad it seems to be working!
Regarding Adobe Premiere, yes I use version 2.0 quite a bit and it is a wonderful program. However, I am sure I am only scratching the surface of what it can do as it is really meant for the professional end of the market and is full of all sorts of bells and whistles, many of them not particularly obvious.
Its learning curve is enormously steep, so if you want to be really depressed, try it!!!
Just kidding.
Most significantly, though, in terms of your current project, Premiere does not like mpeg-2 format at all, though it can output to a version of it which in turn is difficult to handle in consumer level programs like VS! So I don't recommend it at all for what you are doing.
But really, VS10+ is surprising sophisticated in what it can do, and costs a small fraction of what Premiere does...
