Adding or buying Codecs

Post by jymetalwood »

:( Howdy:
I've gone thru the ulead site, this users forum. I have not been able to find a method of changing codecs.

I use a Hitachi DVD camera for my source. I need to edit the video so it is frame based to use with the next program on my computer.

I will not be making DVDs, using the WMV format, does get me frame based video.
I'm trying VS 10, and it doesnt give an option for frame based and mpg 2.
As the video is mpg 2 now, I would like a good codec to edit this with.
If anyone is interested in writing to me privately I would enjoy the info.

Welcome to the forums Joe,

Yes you can use frame based with the MPEG compression, or an AVI. First what format of video file are your source video clips? I'll suspect MPEG since it is a DVD camcorder, and hopefully it uses the MPEG-2 (DVD Compliant) format.

To change the field order, after editing is done, then go to Share>Create Video File. In the drop-down menu, go all the way to the bottom and select Custom. Now in the save as dialog, the type of file should be MPEG, if not change it. Then click on the Options button. In the dialog that opens go to the middle tab, and you will find a pull-down menu beside Frame Type. That contains the filed orders, Upper Field First, Lower Filed First and Frame Based.

What format are you wanting as the end result? Since your source is MPEG-2, your going to loose quality if you do much editing and recoding. You want to limit the amount of recoding that is done.

With MPEG you are limited to what VS has, Ulead MPEG.now. However AVI has several compression codecs available, such as DV, (almost lossless), WMV, DixX, and Huffy to name a few.
