I've managed to get relinking work where the VSP file depends only on video files. But I cannot find a way to relink a VSP that includes other VSP files. The set I have used is to provide a Menu.VSP file that includes the various elements of the DVD (multiple VSPs that work with video files) and defines the menu and captions. When opening Menu.VSP, the broken links are not detected, and I am unable to suggest to it that it ought to let me 'relink'. When I click on "Share" followed by "Create Disc", the software crashes and send Microsoft an error report.
Does anyone know how to relink in this situation?

The first question that springs to mind is why you get a re link message at all.
What have you moved or deleted to cause the re link message to pop up.
You sound like you know what a vsp file is, but to be on the safe side please view my explanation here:
What is a project file?

I only get a relink message when I load a VSP that includes only video files. I get no relink message when I load a VSP that includes only other VSP files. That's part of the problem. VS9 does not seem to cater for relinking in this case. I tried forcing a relink by clicking 'Relink...' from the File menu. Nothing happened, obviously because there are no video files to be relinked in Menu.VSP. The crash obviously happens because the path names to the lower level VSP files are wrong. None of this helps put it right.

I moved the entire set of project files for this to go wrong. I brought a new PC and recovered my old data, but want to store it somewhere separate to the OS for data protection (OS installs format the disk before first...).
Thanks for your reply.

Aha - the base files had been moved.
You have to open each and every vsp file and relink.
In other words, let us suppose you have a project as follows:
Project X - this comprises of vsp files named project A, Project B, Project C
it may also include a sprinkling of other videos.
Firstly Open Project A and obey any relink messages.
Now open Project B and again obey any relink messages
The same applies to project C.
The LAST project to be opened will be Project X.

Yep! As per my original post...
> I've managed to get relinking work where the VSP file depends only on video files.
So, as you can see I have already done Projects A, B and C. Now, the reason for posting in the first place was Project X, which in my case has no video links, only VSP links.
There does not appear to be a facility for telling Project X where to find Projects A, B and C after the file moves.
VS9 does not even detect they are broken references/links. Instead, VS9 just crashes. I'm coming to the conclusion that VSP to VSP relinks are not supported even if VSP to videos relinks are. Is there a VSP to ASCII conversion tool and vice versa? Then I could manually effect the changes I require!
Have you tried relinking a project setup like this yourself? Theory and practice appear to be quite different.
Thanks.

I tried something similar to Steve's example. I put a clip in the timeline and saved the project as Test.vsp. I then started a new project and inserted the Test.vsp into the timeline and saved that project as Test 2.vsp.sjj1805 wrote:Aha - the base files had been moved.

I then moved the original clip and Test.vsp to another folder. Back to VS I tried to open Test.vsp and it gave me the relinking message. I relinked the clip to Test.vsp. I then re-saved Test.vsp. I then tried to open Test 2.vsp and it gave me the relinking message. I relinked Test.vsp to Test 2.vsp and it opened.
The first time I did it I tried to open Test 2.vsp first, and it did not give me the relinking message.
