BluRay authoring on 4.7 GB DVDs
BluRay authoring on 4.7 GB DVDs
Ulead has provided HD DVD authoring for some time now, in an earlier release of Movie Factory as well as in Video Studio Plus, and I have produced a lot of great HD DVDs on 4.7GB disks which play nicely on my Toshiba HD DVD player using Sony HDV content from my camcorder. They have a playing time of about 23 minutes on a 4.7 GB standard DVD-R, using a standard low cost DVD-R burner.
I am now trying to make BluRay DVDs on a red-laser, standard, 4.7 GB DVD, to see if they can play on the PlayStation 3 and other BluRay players. There does not appear to be any way to build and write BlueRay disks with MovieFactory 6 Plus that I can find, despite the advertising claims. Perhaps a true blue laser BluRay burner has to be present to make a true BluRay disk before any of the menu options appear? This is ***NOT*** the case for HD DVD.
Does anybody have any knowledge or experience with burning BluRay DVDs with MovideFactory 6 Plus???
Thanks very nuch in advance for any information.

I created some HighDef videos in Blu-Ray format on my harddisk.
Burned the folders to a dvd. When I put it into the PS3 it only shows up as a data disk. I couldn't find a program tht would write to dvd and ID it as blu-ray format, like writing dvd-video dvd's.
So for now I've just been writing the hd-mpeg2 files directly to the dvd's as data and the PS3 plays them accessing the dvd in manual mode.
You can put all the mpegs into a folder called /VIDEO to make it easier rather than hitting the triangle and using the show all feature.
I used the first release of MF5 (the one they pulled) to test this out and I couldn't get it to work. Wonder if I tried creating blu-ray folders with no menu's. Didn't try that.
I have another 3.5" sata harddisk rigged to the PS3 and installed Linux on on it. I was wondering if I used the DD command and grabbed the ID part of a blu-ray disk if maybe I could write that to a dvd which could possibly make the system think it's a blu-ray disk and not a dvd. Doesn't sound possible though because they are different lasers.

Thanks very much for replying. How do you select BluRay format for the output template? I see "HD DVD" as a choice, and then "HD Standard 30G" and "HD Standard 15G" as the two sub-choices with in, but there are no BVluRay options availablke whatsoever that I am aware of. If I could create a hard disk folder with the right BluRay files, then I could burn it to a standard DVD, but I can't see any way to create the hard disk files.
Thanks again.

Larry,
That's why I wrote:
>>>I used the first release of MF5 (the one they pulled)
In the first release of MF5 standard edition the options were in the burning module. After the 1st update patch to MF5 Standard they were removed.
They even changed the MF5 first release before the patch. So it depends if you downloaded the very first release.
MovieFactory 5 Plus was released after MF5 standard and never had the support except for creating a BDAV disk.
Guess there were problems with the Blu-Ray part.

Does MF 6+ really do BluRay????
Thanks again for your reply above. I guess that MF5 originally did BD disks, but then discontinued the support, but why does Ulead now claim that MF6+ creates BD disks but appears ***NOT*** to really include it?
I guess I am back to my original question, but should state it a bit more carefully:
Has anyone been able to author BD / BluRay disks with MovieFactory 6+?

You have answered my question!!
Looks like no BluRay support for writing true menues, chapters, etc. either on full BluRay burners or on any other burners. Nor is there any support for writing smaller 4.7GB red laser DVD-Rs with BluRay content, even though the HD-DVD disks work great in my Toshiba HD-DVD player.
Thanks for your help!

I was indeed talking about Ulead software. To my knowledge there are currently no other low cost BD authoring programs. The next cheapest software I have found is From Sonic and is in the 500 dollar range.
I expect a number of existing software products which currently do inexpensive stand def DVD authoring will be updated for BD as the BD burners become more affordable. Presemtly Ulead does a great job on HD DVD red laser disks so I was hoping it could do the same for BluRay.
Thanks for your reply.

I suspect they are working on it. When I use MF6 to import a Blu_Ray Disk format (menu's) from my hardddisk the import program doesn't pop-up with any errors.Presemtly Ulead does a great job on HD DVD red laser disks so I was hoping it could do the same for BluRay.
It says "Sorry, MF doesn't support this format YET". Does says the work "YET".
evensu,
I make high definition slide shows and high def videos which I share
with my family who live in different cities...... The high resolution of
HD DVDs make much better image quality than standard DVDs with 6 times as many pixels, 2 million per frame versus 350,999 per screen for 720 by\ 480 standard def. My son has a PS3 and I wanted to send him BluRay compatible high def disks also, but Ulead MF6 Plus is apparently totally useless for this task. I have been rendering .m2t and .mpg slideshows using other software for a couple years, so I am glad to find out that the PS3 should be able to open and play these files without needing MF6 Plus at all. I hoped to make menus, chapters, etc. with MF6 Plus but it will not support these functions whatsoever in BluRay. I don't believe it will\ provide them even if I had a BluRay GD burner, since the BD portion of\ MF6Plus has absolutely no menuing or chapter authoring whatsoever.

Here are 2 BD authoring programs I know of which make menus, chapters, etc. The Sonic program has been on the market since April 2006.
There may be others as well.....
