MPEG-2 Codec

Post by feed71 »

Hi there,

I noticed when converting Video into MPEG2 that a black footnote in the picture says LEAD MPEG2 Eval Decoder (2.0

Does this mean I have to purchase this codec from the manufacturer Lead separately ($10 for the decoder, $40 for the encoder)?

I felt confident enough with VS10 to leave the manual at my parents - so I can't check on this right now. The situation is that I have to produce a high quality clip (only 30 seconds long!) for a TV screen rather than the net asap. The footnote is rather unsuitable for the audience (students) and may make me look foolish...!

Can anybody help, please?

In all my years on this Board, this is a new one to me!!

What version of Video Studio are you using?

I think the message may have a letter missing or else is the result of malicious software (malware...?) The manufacturer of Video Studio is of course Ulead...

But as far as I am aware, all successive versions of VS, including the trial versions, install a full version of its mpeg-2 codec, not an evaluation version. And you never need to buy separately any codec from Ulead. (And if I recall correctly, there is no such beast advertised anywhere on the Ulead website.)

Unless Corel/InterVideo/Ulead have changed their policy... ?

I agree with you Ken..

My question is where in the world did you obtain your program? As a beta-tester for VS10, there was never any such warning, or omission of codecs. This certainly wreaks of malware...

First I would check your system for the codecs that you do have. You can use a free program called Sherlock. You can get it through the following link: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/She ... ective.htm

Then do a full system check for spyware/adware. There are programs like LavaSoft's Adaware, or Spybot Search and Destroy.

Following that I would definitely do a full virus scan.

If you have a legit copy, then something has hosed it.

Not sure if this is related, but I just ran "Sherlock' through my system (HP Media Center) .. and I find 3 references to LEAD Technologies Inc.

They are ...

Lead MCMP/MJPEG Codec
Lead MCMP/MJPEG Codec (VFW)
Lead MCMP/MJPEG Codec Decoder

They all appear to be part of the Common Files\HP\Memories folder.

Although these are totally different to the original query, at least it shows that LEAD codecs do exist.

cheers .. Paul

Thanks for that Paul. In fact, now having done a Google search, I find that Lead Technologies Inc is quite a legitimate company. While mainly concerned with imaging, its product list includes a DVD module, a Video Streaming Module and various mpeg-2 transport stream modules.

But to the original poster: this codec clearly has nothing to do with Ulead. Can you tell us though what the original video source was? And what exactly do you mean when you say you 'converted' video (what kind of video?) into mpeg-2. A detailed description of your work flow would be helpful.

Once you have finished editing, did you choose Share > Create Video File > DVD? Or did you choose 'mpeg-2'? Then did you just accept the default setting or use Custom settings?

It would be helpful in this regard to know if, when you choose Share > Create Video File > DVD > Custom > Options, what shows under the General tab as the Encoder Driver at the top. Are there multiple choices including a Lead codec (evaluation version)? Is the 'Ulead Mpeg. Now Encoder' listed? (It should be as it is the default mpeg codec for Ulead products.)

If the latter codec is not there, then I would be reinstalling VS10 or if you have the full disc version, a Repair to try to get the correct codec installed.

Thanks everyone for the quick messages so far!

I aim to answer the fair number of questions in order:

1) I am using VS 10 +, and of course it is genuine (would I post here otherwise?!)

2) I have done thorough searches for spyware, malware, viruses etc.

3) Lead is an acknowledged company for Video-codecs

4) My work sequence was: DV-camera-> capture video -> chosen clip put on the Timeline -> Create Video File -> PAL MPEG2 720x576 25fps

5) I have also tried the "Share -> create Disk" option with the default DVD features (to achieve the same required PAL MPEG2 720x576 25fps as above)

6) Sherlock shows:
LEAD MPEG2 Decoder (2.0) as C:\Windows\system32\LDECMPG22.dll
LEAD MPEG2 Encoder (2.0) as C:\Windows\system32\LENCMPG22.dll
and
LEAD Video RGB Converter as C:\Windows\system32\LMVRGBxf.dll

(I note this looks slightly different to Hugo's)

7) Kevin: When I look in Share > Create Video File, then there are multiple options for formats to save it in. When I use PAL DVD (4:3) then this should be the same as if I do it manually (as descibed above in steps 4 and 5 respectively). I am not certain what you mean with "what shows under the General tab as the Encoder Driver at the top" when I go to "Custom". But the default there seems to be Microsoft AVI. There is also a "Ulead Image Sequence files (.uis)" option. I can't see a 'Ulead Mpeg. Now Encoder' there.

8 ) If I go to Tools -> change Capture plug-in the default one is currently Ulead VFW Catprue Plug-in. I am not aware that I have ever changed this.

Okay, I hope this helps for now; please let me know if something is still unclear, many thanks

I suspect you have installed an old ulead trial version on that machine, or another program did and it was fairly old.
Look in your add/remove program list for any programs(especially ulead) that are old & remove them.

I don't have those files under my windows installation.

I think when you remove those files or the conflicting program and re-install/repair VS10+ it will work properly.
If you can't find the program then move them by hand. Reboot & double check to make sure they aren't present anymore. Windows protection may prevent you from easily removing them by replacing them with it's backup copy.

You never stated what operating system your using win98se, xp etc.

Spot on!

I have deinstalled the trial version of another program which is dealing with AVI -> MPEG conversion and now things are all okay, many thanks!!!

And just as a footnote for future reference, when you go to Share > Create Video File and select Custom, the default format might be shown as Microsoft AVI, but if you click on the arrow, it will also show other formats, including MPEG. If you select that, and then Options, a dialogue box with three tabs comes up. The central one is General, and on that you will find the Encoder Driver setting.

You get the same 3 tabbed dialogue box if you select Tools > Make Movie Manager, then one of the DVD templates and then 'Edit'.
