standard selection tool/clicking outside

It seems to me on the standard selection tool in previous versions, after you made a box (circle, rectangle) that if you changed your mind and clicked outside it would disappear.
Similar to what the control g does?
When I use the selection tool, and highlight a square or whatever, then change my mind, if I clicked on a space outside it would make the selection disappear, now it just stays there unless I draw another, or click control g.
Like I say before I could just click outside and the selection would disappear.
Seems that was the way in version 10
