Double Layer DVD
I went to write to a 8.4g disk with a file that was 7.3g and Ulead came back and said file was to large for current disc do I want to make it fit? (It saw the disc was 8.4) I said yes. When all was said and done the file on the disk was 3.9gigs. I am using the trial version 10, and if I can't solve this, I might not be convinced to "buy"

It seems to me that, although the program might have "known" that you had a dual layer disc in the computer, you did not physically change the setting to reflect that. As a result, the 'reduce to fit' function made it suitable to fit on a single layer (4.3 GB) DVD.
When you get into the burning module, if you look down in the bottom left hand corner, just above the three icons, you will see by default "DVD 4.7G", with a downward-pointing arrow beside it. When you click on the arrow, you are presented with a variety of disc formats to choose from. You have to choose DVD 8.5 G, of course...

We don't know the format of your 7.3GB file... It must be converted to MPEG-2, if it's not already. And, the audio needs to be LPCM or Dolby AC3 (MPEG-2 audio is also allowed for PAL).
If your file is already DVD compatible MPEG-2, check the box under Project Settings that says Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files. Then, it will not be re-encoded and the size won't change.
The file size is determined by the playing time and the bitrate (combined audio & video bitrate). Here's a handy Bitrate Calculator.
