Post by dcailler »

Videotaped a high school musical show using two camcorders...would like to create one edited DVD using video from each camera...having difficulty using
Video Studio 10+ to do this...any tips to make it easier...or is it impossible to do correctly?

You can do it with VS10, but it's not easy, mainly because you can't cut clips while they are in the Overlay Track (hopefully they fix this in v11).

With two cameras you are going to have your main video, and your cut-away video. Your main video is what is playing for the majority of the time. The cut-away is for close-ups, audience reaction, that sort of thing. To get around the problem of not being able to cut in the main video track, use your Overlay Tracks for the video and the Video Track as your "work space".

For instance, put your main video in Overlay #1. Put your cut-away video in the Video Track. Now you need to sync them some way, either visually or audiolly( ).

Now you want to find the pieces of the cut-away track (in the Main Video track) that you want to use. Let's just say you have a 10 second clip and you want to use it from the 2 second mark to the 4 second mark as a cut-away. In the Main Video track click on the Scissors at 2 and 4 seconds. Now right click on that cut clip and Copy. Then Paste that to your library. Now drag it back down to Overlay #2, at the same spot it appears in the Main Video track (it should snap into place).

So what you are doing is using Overlay #1 as your Main Video, Overlay #2 as your cut-away track, and the Main Video track you will delete after all your editing is done. It's very cumbersome, but I think it is the easiest way to keep everything in sync until a version comes about that allows cutting in the Overlay tracks.

Does this apply to version 8 also? I just am starting to dabble into video editing and was able to pick up version 8 cheap on ebay. I realize that it's an older version, but I wanted to dabble before I get totally immersed in this. ANy other pointers?

I don't think Overlay tracks were introduced until v9, and that was just one. Version 10+ comes with 6. You could still edit a 2 camera shoot, but it would be a lot of work (I've done it :? ). Basically you would split the audio from the video onto its own audio track. Then you would have to cut up the 2 clips and try to synch them to the audio. Good luck.

If it's something you might do on a regular basis I would upgrade (v11 could be released soon).

As for as pointers read the Suggested Workflow. Also check the Tutorials (a link is under my signature).

I think 'Black Lab' s memory is fading a bit - version 8 does have an overlay track so you can use the same method there for your 'main' and 'cutaway' cameras.

but be very careful about what you are buying on e-bay - several posters on here have paid for free cutdown ('SE') versions

C'mon, that was 2-3 years ago. I barely remember what I had for dinner 2 days ago.

I hope too !! I am using Mgix for this kind of things, but for the common videos, UVS10+ is much simpler to use.

UVS-11 should improve a lot of things regarding the overlay tracks..
