Video jitter on DVD playback

Post by paicolman »

Hi,
I have finished my short video with MSP 7, and now have noticed in the DVD that it jumps. It does not look like dropped frames, because the effect is rather as if it would pick one frame that lies before and plays it again, at least it's how it's perceived. I've read it can be due to high bitrate, but I use the standard DVD setup (max 8000 kbps). Any other ideas of what it could be?

As said, it's only when playing back the DVD, the generated mpeg2 file looks OK, so do the source files. The source is PAL-DV, the mpeg file is NTSC, but I think that should not be the problem, or is it?

Thanks!

Reduce bitrate

I'd definitely try reducing the bitrate. I've found that my DVD player has shown jitters above about 6Kbps maximum, and it's a pretty good player.

The Pal->NTSC conversion could have something to do with it, since PAL is only 25 frames per second and NTSC is 30. By nature, some data will need to be repeated to fill in the missing frames.

I would lean towards the standards conversion as causing the effect you are seeing. What software did you use to do the conversions -- did MSP 7.x do the encoding for you?

Procoder 2.0 (or Express) is reported as doing a nice job of standards conversions...

Hi all,
I was away some days, thanks for the hints!
Yes, I encoded with MSP7x, until now I did not try other encoders, nor reducing bitrate. I'll try that out as soon as I can and post the results here...
