To my suprise, I found Ulead VideoStudio 8 SE VCD included with my purchase of a two-port 1394a express card plug-in.
I have edited my .wmv and .avi files using the VS 8. I have made menus, chapters, you name it. It's great in ways. I saved it as one .wmv file and emailed it to my friend in Colorado - it works great there and here.
I try to burn a DVD from my Dell to an external Plextor 708UF using the VS 8, keeping in mind my file is but 1:04 long, 53 Kb. It doesn't work. I render it to .avi. It doesn't work. I check the movie maker manager: the selections are: dv; VCD; mpeg1; .rm; and, .wmv.
Next, in Create A Disk, then Output Disk Format, is only VCD.
I emailed, read Read Me, checked the forum, and here I am.
My question is: seeing this is VS 8 SE VCD - is that exactly it? How on earth can I use this software to burn a dvd file that is watchable when it does not allow it anyway? What does VCD play on anymore? Obviously, I need new.
None of these formats will work in any of three dvd players I have here, using practical experience and the dvd player compatibility chart in this forum. I have tried 8 disks and none work.
Interestingly, I use free watermark conversion from .wmv and .avi to dvd and it plays dreamy.
Are there updates? Should I use a different Ulead product? I'm new to this Ulead idea. Please help.
Tried and tried VS 8 SE VCD... now what?

Unfortunately I'm afraid you cannot use your current version of VideoStudio to burn a DVD.
As you have told us you received your copy of VideoStudio free with your hardware and as it is an 'SE' version it has some of it's features disabled - you have also told us that your version is "SE VCD" which means it can only burn a VCD, also from what you have said you do not have the option to create a mpeg2 file which is what you need to be able to use another programme to burn a DVD.
You can use VideoStudio to author and burn a DVD - but not the version you have - you need a 'Full' version - you can get version 10+ heavily discounted at the moment and as you have a valid version you can purchase the 'upgrade' version saving you even more money.

ulead vs 10+?
Thanks for your quick reply.
I can do anything with .avi and .wmv... and I have a need to burn these files to dvds that I can ship to people who will not download. They want a hard copy dvd to slide into a player and watch.
Are you telling me that ulead VS 10+ will do that? And is it under downloads that I can receive the ulead customer discount?

Yes you are correct. Even the Full Version of VS8 could do that. But the version you have is a freebie, simplified version, that had a lot of the functions removed, which is common for free versions.
VS10+ can do that and much more. You can get it HERE
