Yes.
Start a new project and select CAPTURE (tab) then select IMPORT FROM DVD/DVD-VR (with the DVD you had created in your DVD drive).
You then capture that DVD.
From there you can output (SHARE) to MPEG or AVI file.

Or, if it is really only a 3 minute VOB, copy that to your hard disc and change the extension from .vob to .mpg...

By the way, if that is all you burned to the DVD, then you need to be aware that many players cannot deal with DVDs with less than 1 GB of video on them. However, I would have thought that VS would have padded the disc to reach that space.

Now on some DVD players it works but on others it will not.
And, some players simply can't play "burned" DVDs. Others can play DVD-R but not DVD+R, or vice versa. If you don't know about particular player, your best odds are with DVD-R.

Ken,
If you use the VS interface to import the vob directly then VS will extract the mpeg2 file correctly from the vob, especially when the vob is padded.
VS will prompt you asking do you want to convert.
You pointed this out last year in another post.
This is actually the correct method, especially if the dvd was recorded on a dvd recorder and you want to work with the vob's directly. Many of the dvd recorders, sony/pana include closed captions. So renaming the vob to mpeg2 where there are closed captions also in the vob file may not work to well.
Usually depends on the program that created the dvd.

Hello
Thank you all for your replies re re VOB files.
What I do not understand is how the file became a VOB file...Can any explain please? I have made small movies before following all the instructions and they have always been mpeg files. Finally can it also be explained what is ment by padding out?
Once again thank you all

When you render to DVD (amongst other formats) you end up with an MPEG file.
When you burn a DVD (using the DVD MPEG input file) you end up with VOB, BUP and IFO files all of which are required by a DVD player to play the DVD correctly.

Have a look at this web page
