Hi,
Does anyone know how I can designate the location of the temp file that VS9 uses in rendering, and ensure that this temp file is the one VS9 uses? I have about 2 Gb normally available on my C: drive which is plenty for general use but not for video work, so I want to ensure VS9 uses a temp file that I want to place on my large external drive.
I've just been rendering a small 2 min video file when my computer choked on a full C: drive. Upon investigation it seems that the temp file in C:\documents & settings\local settings\temp is the file that is filling up. Surprisingly this temp file contains stuff from 2006 so it doesnt appear to get cleaned out automatically.
I suspect that I can just delete any temp files generated about the time it filled up, but there are files in this folder that don't appear to be temporary. Any ideas on safely clearing a temp file?
I will very much appreciate any help you can offer on these issues folks. Thanks.

Re: How can I designate te location of my VS9 Temp filr
Thanks Steve for the referral to the VS10 Settings & Preferences Tutorial. That is easily the best tutorial I have ever seen created for any piece of software! Congrats Videoman!
It did help me get my temp preview files to be saved into a new temp directory on my external HD - which is what I wanted. However some VS9 temp files are still going to a temp directory in my Documents and Settings folder. Any ideas what these may be and how I can redirect these to my special temp directory Steve? I don't know what the origin is for these VS9 temp files.
Since temp folders don't get cleared automatically, large video temp files can fill up a drive quickly. Seems they must be cleared manually.
Footnote: A button to purge all VS9/VS10 video temp files or a utility to do the same would be an excellent addition to any video editing program.

Where you set the HDD and Directory for your working folders in VS, the first option is generally the C:\Documents and Settings..., and it defaults to being selected. Uncheck the box beside it. I always do when I'm working on a project. I then further go to the drop-down menu at the bottom, that says Hard Disk. It is also defaulting to C:\, change it to your working drive. Be advised that these settings do not stick, so you will probably have to uncheck #1 and set the Hard Disk each time you start a project.

In addition, in the burning module, in the first of the three icons in the bottom left of screen, there is a further Preferences setting for a working folder. This is totally separate from the one in the main editing screen File > Preferences and you would need to separately designate another folder. Otherwise, the temp files associated with the burning phases will go to the default folder in My Documents\etc.

Here's a handy little free utillity it displays the Size of every folder on your PC in an Explorer type drop down tree with a Traffic Lights Red, Amber and green to emphasize large folders. I was suprised at the amount of Temp rubbish I was totally unaware of until I was shown where to look.
