Is it safe to remove earlier vesions of VS?

Post by burrwick »

I have VS-8, 9 and 10 loaded on my computer. While each earlier version is necessary when upgrading to a newer version, after upgrading is it safe to go in and remove 8 and 9 using the "Add and Remove" programs without any adverse effects to version 10?

I have a laptop that is running out of hard disk space and would sure love to remove these earlier versions but I'm afraid 10 won't run correctly without them.

Thanks

Hi I'm fairly certain that it's safe to delete previous versions after an upgrade but to be safe just wait for a confirmation before you do it.
The reason I've answered your post is that Ulead provide us with a number of Special Effects with each version (Transitions-Images-Masks etc). Now you might expect our library of these to grow larger with each upgrade but not so, each version has some new ones but also loses some of the old and often very useful ones. Ulead have collected these together and will generously sell them back to us as a download. Neat trick that!
However before you delete the old versions you can remove the Effects you've paid for and incorporate them into your new one.
See this tutorial from 'Transitions' down:

Feedback after members have endeavoured to help you is not only good manners it also helps others to know if a given solution was effective. Thanks.

You can safely remove older versions from your PC. In fact, you do not have to have them installed when installing an upgrade. Older installers asked for the location of the setup.exe for the previous version. VS 10 will ask for the serial number of the previous qualifying version, doesn't have to be VS9, as long as it is a version which qualifies you for the upgrade.

Should you have ill effects after removing the older versions, just run a repair installation of VS 10.

Just note that if you do uninstall some older versions you might remove some shared files and you probably will have to do a repair or reinstall of v10 to replace those files.
