What a minefield...
Put on an earlier post today about "mpeg4 plug ins" for videostudio 9 which I understood were a free download at some time but now taken off the web by Ulead. No luck as yet on a reply to my original request but what a minefield the codec's are - I had bundled with my new camera the Ulead "Moviefactory for Sanyo" which works fine and the codec's for the mpeg4 cant be that much different but of course my full package of Videostudio 9 cant see them.
The more you find out about newer codec's the more complicated it seems to get and I am starting to think using standard AVI and buying a new hard disk is the easier option as its safe and far less complicated.
I also find it hard to understand why ulead would drop mpeg support for a product I purchased just over a year ago - if it was a car I would be mad.
Can anyone bail me out on this please.

Ulead have not dropped MPEG4, what you probably have been confused with was that Registered VideoStudio 9 users were for a limited period given a free download of an MPEG4 codec.
You can use lots of different codecs with VideoStudio - see this link regarding use of the DivX codec as an example:

Having the mpeg4 plugin in VS9 for your Sanyo cam isn't a big deal because you can't natively edit in the mpeg4 codec.
I don't know what version of MovieFactory your running but in order to edit your videos you would export them from MF (using the export feature) to a more editable format.
Then use those new files that are in an editable format to load into VS9 and edit them directly.
You should be converting your mpeg4's to mpeg2 or Dv.avi type-1 to load into VS9 for editing.

Ref MovieFactory
It's the DVD MovieFactory 4 and you cant save them in any other format and it will only allow you to write to a CD or DVD and no other device.

Codec's
You are correct about the free issue of the mpeg4 codecs from Ulead and that was what I hoped someone had saved and could have sent to me. Its always a problem with downloads as most people download and install them straight away but when the rainy day comes and the system crashes no back up can be found unless you saved it to disk and stored it away...
I can remember 3 times it's happened to me in the past - and I still have to admit the lesson has not been learnt...

I just removed MF4 from this machine today.
With your video on the timeline of MF4 you should be able to click on the 3rd Icon down on the left side of the timeline (pretty sure that's the export icon).
Click on the export icon and there will be a few choices of various formats to export the video to. If you select Customize that will bring up another screen to pick and customize your settings.
To export your mpeg4 to dv.avi type-1 you would choose customize -> AVI in the formats drop-down box -> options, under compression select the DV-Type1 and set the audio to DV.Type-1. Check for the proper framesize, it should be preset.
If only doing small editing then exporting to a mpeg2 dvd compliant file is probably the fastest (and easiest). DV files are quite large.
You can also pre-make custom mpeg2 settings using the template manager. Then when you click on the export icon your customized template will be displayed and you can select it directly.
In MF4 the export feature was a new addition. So icon isn't as noticable as versions 5 & 6, but it's there, the 3rd down on the left side of the timeline.

you've probably received this question a thousand times, so my apologies....I just purchased the video Ipod and want to export some of my Video Studio 9 videos to it, but apparently I need the mp4 plug-in first......and I can't locate the plug in on the Ulead site....do I need to purchase it, or is it a free download? and where can I find it?
many thanks

texbosoxfan,
I thought that the mp4 plugin was included in distros after VS9.
Maybe try downloading VS11+ trial and see if you get the plugin with the trial.
If VS9 doesn't work correctly after installing VS11+ then just re-install VS9 again. If VS11+ did include the mpeg4 codecs then you probably can see them in VS9 because the programs share the files in a common files section.
