If your source material is NTSC then you need to go into the template
"Tools | Make Movie manager"
locate the template and edit. go to the compression tab and alter the settings from PAL 25 fps to NTSC 29.97 fps
Sorry cannot be more specific as I am not at home at the moment.

Time to update this for X2.
I tried directly uploading to youtube from X2 and it didnt work. Complained about authentication even though the account was fine.
In 10+ I used to create an avi and upload it from youtube which took forever to render.
Now there is a create flv option in X2. So I tried that (640*480) and it is quicker to upload but seems worse quality than creating an avi.

My experience has been the quality depends not only on the source material, but also on the amount of movement in the video. YouTube does not cope well with a lot of movement. The video below was done with X2, but I did not use the direct upload method. Like you I uploaded an AVI file. Took a while, but the quality is pretty good.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.mspx
With all your AVCH files in the time line, render the video to WMV HD 1280 x 720 (the file will be very big).
In Windows Media Encoder > Convert File>Select File Download (Computer Play Back)>High Quality Definition Video (5 Mbps VBR 1280 x 720)
In the sample below the file was reduced from 1,222,895 KB to 293,414KB, the video is 7.30 min in length. When you click on ¡¥watch in HD¡¦ you get a large wide screen in HD.
Utube will only accept file size under 1Gig and no longer than 10min.
Hope this helps.
My sample is here:
