To be honest this software throws up more problems than I can handle, and i`ll probably bin it before long. Its driving me mad

We need more info. Such as, what are your clip and project properties (are you recording in 16:9 mode but your project setting may be 4:3)? Are the black borders on all 4 sides, or only 2?
What are some of your other problems?

Thanks for your quick reply, I have sorted this problem, somehow its changing from avi to mpeg in the project properties menu, but why?
Other problems including closing an edited file using save as, then not being able to reload the file eg: File format mismatch!, under sharing creating my file, then having it crash at 99%, not being able to load my images, the same file format mismatch coming up frequently, i`m pretty savvy with computers, but i`ve only been using this software for 3 days, and its driving me nuts

Let's start here. Give that a read and then respond with as much of the requested info as possible.
Let's work on one problem at a time - we'll start with the properties changing, since that's the first problem that you hit, and it may cure your others.
