My new hdrsr1... a few questions

Post by AndyMac »

Hi all,
This is my first time on this forum. My wife just bought me an hdrsr1 for my birthday. I have to say, the avchd issues bugged me until I discovered this forum, and will test the advice given.
My questions:
1. Can I test the avchd file conversion to HD MPEG2 on the trial version of MovieFactory 6 Plus?
2. Having read the instructions for the trial Movie Factory 6 Plus, I'm unsure whether an activation code is required to install it. Can anyone advise?
3. Once I've converted teh files to HD MPEG2, can I import them into Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to edit and, if so, what is the rendered, exported quality of the same like?
4. Can an edited HD MPEG2 movie be saved to a standard DVD, and, if so, what are the implications for movie playback quality?

Thanks in advance for your help.

YES
2. Having read the instructions for the trial Movie Factory 6 Plus, I'm unsure whether an activation code is required to install it. Can anyone advise?
I would NOT recommend activating the TBYB Version.
If you are satisfied with MF6+ then goto the ulead website. Select buy or purchase to download, you will be directed to the Element5 website. At element5 you will create a username & password. Write those down and do not lose them. That would be your "Element 5" account. NOT your ulead account nor ulead registraion of the product.
Download all the provided links into a common directory, after downloading REMOVE the TBYB version from your system and reboot the computer. You should be able to save projects from the TBYB version & reload them into the retail version of MF6+. Never tried.
After un-installing the TBYB version of MF6+ run the executable file (1st download) and compile into a new directory for installation, install & reboot the computer. Backup the downloads & especially your Provided Serial#
3. Once I've converted the files to HD MPEG2, can I import them into Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to edit and, if so, what is the rendered, exported quality of the same like?
NO, you must use the HD-Mpeg2 files in ulead programs only :) , Joking of course, yes, you should be able to do this. Adobe may only support mpeg2 audio in the hd file if using the mainconcept encoder/decoder plugin so you will have to test this and export the hd-meg2 file with different audio codec's. Mpeg2 audio is probably what's required for the plug-in.
4. Can an edited HD MPEG2 movie be saved to a standard DVD, and, if so, what are the implications for movie playback quality?
Very good, you may experience Dvd-Nausea, Dvd-Vomiting, Dvd-Headaches as side effects  .
Although your cam already comes with software to perform conversions to dvd format..

Still the HDRSR1

I downloaded the software last night and installed MF6+. By following the edge's advice I was very quickly able to import the AVCHD files. It was quite easy - simple in fact - thanks to this forum.
Having got this far, I decided to export the AVCHD files as HD MPEG2 files and then have a whirl at editing something together on Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5. Exporting the files was easy enough, but the result was not entirely to my satisfaction. I suspect my novice status is contributing to the problem!
The exported HD MPEG2 files - when played on Windows Media Player and Power DVD - were jerky when playing, although the picture quality was bang on the mark! As an example, I set my HDRSR1 up on a tripod and filmed in HD (the highest quality setting of the same) myself walking away from the camera and then back towards it. I'm sorry, I don't know technical terms, but the footage of me walking would go fine for about a second - but not quite two - and then seemingly pause for an instant before restarting the motion with gusto to catch up. The sound appeared to be fine.
I'm sure my problems are caused by the fps and kbps issues, but then again I don't really know what I'm talking about!
I set the MF6+ to HD DVD 15 gig, and customised a template to match the footage from my camera. I did note, however, that when importing the file it gave the fps as 25, but when clicking the 'i' button to the right of the timeline it gave it as 29.? fps.
Any how, having bored you all to tears by now, I would like any one who has made it this far, to offer advice, if they'd be so kind.
Regards
Andy M (the HDRSR1 is my first ever movie camera)

Hey AndyMac

If you take a look to the previous page you see that I have exactly the same problem.
But it's good that we are now 2 people (from europe) who have the same problem. That's a confirmation that this could be a bug.

AndyMac,
According to the previous 2 posts (including yours) if the video's recorded at 25fps and MF6 assigns them as being 29.970 then no point in continuing.
This first step of conversion is a key factor.
If this is the case then it must be resolved by tech support.

I''ve read some articles on the web on the SR1 unit. There are firmware updates to correct some audio issues with this cam. You may want to look into this, may not be related to the frame rate issue. The information is on the sony support website.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem than Limbi and AndyMac. Also I am a Pal user. I don¡¬t see any answer from technical support about this problem since
Limbi describe it very well with captured pictures. MF6 does not convert correctly to HD standar format for pal users and the result is always a jerky video. This is a neccesary step for editing videos captured with sony sr1, so it is very important that somebody could gives a solution.

PD: Is not a problem of camera firmware, I have the last firmware from Sony.
