Wind Noise Removal

Post by tpietrzak »

Media Studio Pro 7

Is there somebody who can give me a quick tutorial on how to remove wind noise from a video using the Video Editor (or whatever). Do I need to split the video from the audio, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wind noise is quasi-impossible to remove because it is not constant. Your best bet would be the noise removal feature of Audacity (free of charge, open source) on a split audio.

I started to get that impression that Audacity would be the solution after reviewing several other video editing product's forums. Can somebody give me the 2-second guide to splitting audio using media studio? Me things that I can figure out easy enough how to rejoin them after the edit of the audio, but if somebody wants to pass on advice on that, I am a good listener (reader).

Thanks!

Place your video on the timeline, right click the video and select 'split.'
My advice regarding wind noise is to replace the piece of affected sound.

There are three ways of doing this.
1. Add background music to mask the sound of the wind.
2. Replace with music.
3. One of my favourites - but takes a bit of time and patience - grab some similar sound from another part of the video, make any required modifications to that piece of sound with Audacity - free sound editor and then replace your faulty section with that.

In fact you probably have quite an extensive sound effects library - you just didn't know it yet. Whilst you can purchase these ready made, it is fun making your own. Just extract a sound track from one of your home movies then extract from it various sounds which can later be used in future projects.

Doing this you also have the advantage of no worries about copyright and royalties!

The best way would be to pur your file on the timeline then Create|AudioFile in WAV format. Don't do anything else to your original file, as yet. Open the Audacity and import your created WAV file. Be VERY careful never to do anything to change its size/length. Apply whatever filters you want and tweak it as you wish, then save it to a new name, still as WAV. Take this new file into your MSP timeline on track the second audio track, making sure it is exactly the same length and position as the original. Preview it to make sure the sound synch is correct (it should be). When you are satisfied, select the original video and go to Clip|Split. You will see the selection highlight is now only on the audio track and not the video. You can now press Delete, so that you have only the video and the new audio on the timeline. At this stage, I would Create a new Video file with the same settings, so that you have an integrated video with synched audio that will be just fine for any subsequent editing.

If you wish to work only on a single short take in the middle of a long clip, do the same, but put it on a secondary timeline before integrating it into your project.
