Captured video jerky at start and finish

Post by gbeck51 »

I am having an interesting problem when capturing DV video from my digital camcorder. I was experincing a similar problem with my old system, so upgraded and still have the same problem.

When I capture through firewrie from my Canon ZR60, the first 3-5 scenes will have "stutters" or "jerking" of the video every 3 seconds or so. Every clip after that the capture is fine, and then the last 3-5 scenes of the tape of the same problem.

I've tried numerous tapes and there seems to be the same problem with all of them. When I playback the video on the camera or hook it to the TV, there are none of these problems, so I have no idea why this happens when capturing to the hard drive.

I went through the tutorials and set a video editing profile for my OS, so many services and background programs ARE shut off, so I doubt it's anything like background programs.

I would like to also note that it's been quite awhile since I've done any video editing, but I did do a number of video's in the past with an older version of VS with no problems.

BTW, I am using VS10. Here are my project settings:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

I get no error codes when capturing, I've also tried settings with Microsoft AVI files instead of MPEG with same results.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?? I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. Could there ossibly be a problem with the actual camcorder that is causing this, even though other modes of playback work fine? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Update: I tried to capture using window movie maker and it captures perfectly fine. Of course, you can't split by scene or anything, so it's not much use to me. I guess it must be some setting, but I can't for the life of me figure it out

In Video Studio 10, check to make sure you are capturing using the DV Type 1 Encoder. On installation, I believe it defaults to Type 2, and this often causes people problems -- though usually, I have to admit, for more than just the first few scenes.... Erratic or jerky video is a common occurrence when the wrong Encoder Type is used.

Sorry I am away from home at the moment and don't have VS10 on this computer so can't tell you exactly where it is. But in the Capture screen, find the Options cogwheel icon and you can change the Encoder Type there...

You can Split by Scene after a clip is captured. With your clip selected in the timeline, click on the Video tab. Split by Scene is in the second column of icons, second from the bottom.

you can also right-click the clip's thumbnails in the library and split by scenes is one of the context menu selections.
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.
